A reader sent in this sign a while ago but I had the opportunity to run across it myself last weekend. It is so amazing I had to re-post for those that missed it. I’d also like to add, from the files of you can’t judge a book by its cover, there were a bunch of “tough” looking fellows sitting out front but when I walked over to take the photo they were unbelievably nice and friendly to me.
But bottom line is that this sign may very well be tops in the city.
I wonder why back in the day they used letters for the first two numbers? Was it just easier that way when you’d say, “operator, ring me JO 3-1000”? Anyone know the reason?
I thought it was interesting that after noticing this one a couple hours later I found another from a different company.

I thought this was an interesting combination – Zeman Store featuring clothing and groceries. Zeman Store is located at 4418 Georgia Ave. I suppose it’s like a mini Target. Sweet.

I love this one from H Street, NE. There is just something about “Latest Fashions” and the script that stops me in my tracks every time I pass it.
I thought this sign was amazing. It is from the Capital City Market. In checking the PoP archives for a must read article on the Market by Nichole, I see she got a very similar photo. At any rate be sure to stop by the market to visit the great Litteri
For some reason I’ve had a lot of posts on poop scooping. I’m not sure what that says about me… But anyway, I thought this sign from Mt. P was really kicking the whole thing up a notch.
I’d love to see the reaction of the cops when someone walks in with a video tape making this complaint…
A few weeks ago we judged the Dupont Market located at 1807 18th St NW. A reader writes:
“Looks like Dupont Market was broken into last night. The window on their door was smashed (it now is covered with a board with a sign that says something like, yes, we’re open) and a laptop and some cash was stolen.”
I never really appreciated this sign on the boarded up building next to Velvet Lounge on U Street. An awesome name for sure. Any long time residents who had the opportunity to check this spot out when it was open?
