I’m usually quite fond of dog signs. But I think this one goes over the line. I think we’d get the point if it was just squatting. The excrement is a bit much… Or I guess it’s saying it’s ok if the dog urinates, it just can’t defecate. Oh lord, I’m sorry, I think I’m thinking way too deeply on this one!
The reader writes:
“I don’t know if this qualifies as a sweet city sign, and maybe you’ve shown it before, but I just love the mural of the giant fish leaping in the air. I couldn’t fit it in the pic, but directly to the left of the lettering is the painting of the smaller fish. Not as well depicted, but endearing in its own way. The building is located on the Southwest corner of P and 14th. And then just to keep with the fish theme, I thought I’d include an international sweet city sign, from the Notting Hill area of London.”
Hell’s yes this is a sweet city sign!

“Dear PoP,
Do you have any information about what’s moving in on Columbia Road right next to the Safeway? All the surrounding stores went out of business at roughly the same time so I’m thinking maybe they’re putting some new megastore in there.”
I have received a number of emails asking about this. Back in April we learned that CVS will be taking over this spot. They will be closing their store across the street when this new spot opens. At the time Kristen Barden from Adams Morgan BID wrote me that:
“Combined Properties (www.combined.biz) is combining all of their stores along that stretch – Popeye’s, the beauty supply store, Citibank, etc… and the CVS on the south side of Columbia Road will move over there. I also don’t know what will go in the old CVS space yet…”
And of course construction has also begun on the Safeway which will stay open during renovations.
Finally some movement at that old 14U coffee shop located at 1939 14th St., NW. Back in May we learned it was going to become a cheese steak place. Now we know the name. Anyone ever hear of JJ’s? Is it an independent or a chain?
A buddy of mine saw this sign on 16th a few years ago and thankfully still had it on his camera phone. Too good.
The sign above was spotted not far from the carriage house one post down. And the following just sorta blew my mind:
A reader mentioned that they liked seedy strip bar signs so I thought I’d add the one above from upper Georgia Ave.
And in complete contrast is this sign from a building at Catholic University:
hellomarkers! has found some good ones and added them to the PoPville flickr pool. I thought I’d highlight a few of them here. A little explanation of the sign above:
“i found this beauty as a result of terrible traffic on the bw parkway. since i wasn’t in a rush, i decided to take route one back into the city. and was i ever glad. especially since i was able to pick up groceries for the week, in addition to getting this picture. laurel, md”
I thought this was a pretty funny sight because there was only one beat up Cadillac in the lot. Your captions in the comments and winner announced Thursday due to the holiday Friday.
