Yesterday word spread very quickly that the Lobster Roll truck was finally hitting the streets. @LobstertruckDC hit Farragut Square yesterday and lines were forming by 11am. They sold out (after an additional resupply) by 3pm. Ah lobster rolls.

The truck itself is also quite cool. It has a built in fountain soda dispenser – first I’ve seen:

Today they’ll be at L’enfant plaza but I also heard some more good news. It looks like the truck is going to try to add some night service in addition to regular lunch stops. When I asked where we might be able to find them at night they mentioned Adams Morgan. Sweet. They also encourage you to recommend locations (both day and night) and you can do so, and follow their locations, on twitter here.

The team was kind enough to pose for a photo after a long day’s work at Farragut Square.

It seems like every couple of days we’re hearing about a new food truck coming to DC. Could their days be numbered? Curbside Cupcakes mentions that some BIDs (Business Improvement Districts) are looking to put a stop to their success. They don’t mention which specific BIDs are behind the campaign.

A readers sends in a link to a plea from Curbside Cupcake’s Facebook page:

Dear Nation,

We need your help! Some local merchants and B.I.D’s are lobbying the City Council to limit or kill mobile food trucks in Washington, DC. They want change the law to stop us from being able to operate in DC. No more cupcake bliss right to your curb!!

In this fight, food trucks like Curbside Cupcakes, Fojol, DC Slices, Sauca, are the little guy and we need your help. Strong lobbying interests are working against us. We need to show City Council that DC wants a diverse base of vending options. Mobile trucks like Curbside Cupcakes and others are reaching out to you our friends, followers and families to help us so we can keep bringing you your cupcakes. Otherwise we could get shut down and shut out by larger interests, that have more money, power and influence than we do.

Will you please join our email campaign? DCRA is helping us by collecting comments on the new legislation. We need to collect as many emails in support of us as possible.

[email protected]

Heres a draft of what it could say:

Subject: I Support Title 24 Chapter 5

Dear City Council,

I am a customer of Curbside Cupcakes and I am writing to support the current proposed DCRA regulation Title 24 Chapter 5 that will allow mobile vendors to stay in DC and continue offering more choices and value. Please do not allow the introduction of any discriminatory language into these regulations. Please pass the regulations as written and protect the diverse vending options in the city.

Thank you,

Since food trucks have reached such a large following, it is not terribly surprising to hear some traditional lunch providers may be a bit upset. Think there is any possibility of successful legislation being passed to limit or kill food trucks in DC?

It seems like every week I’m learning about a new Food Truck coming to DC. And I say the more the merrier! This one also sounds pretty sweet. From a press release:

Korean BBQ Tacos have had great success throughout Southern California over the past couple of years, and are now about to make their grand entrance here on the streets of the nation’s capital. Operating from a newly remodeled truck, TaKorean, a delicious fusion blend of Korean BBQ with a twist of Mexican style, is slated to
open to lunch goers during August throughout the downtown metro area.

All TaKorean recipes are made from scratch using the freshest ingredients available. TaKorean will serve vegetarian and vegan options, along with daily specials. Using social media networking, TaKorean will post information weekly and daily so that customers will be able to follow the truck’s city locations every day. Fans and customers can follow Twitter and Facebook feeds @taKorean and also visit the website (coming soon) for a direct feed on the homepage.

Mike Lenard, President of DC Street Food, Inc., has created a variety of Asian inspired taco combinations and menu items to “consistently provide customers with fresh, interesting, healthy, and delicious tasting food that gives them something to smile about.” A native of Washington D.C., Lenard is determined to provide healthy, well-balanced meals at a reasonable price ($5-$9) to his fellow Washingtonians while also giving back to the community and local environmental causes. TaKorean is pledging 1% of gross sales to local environmental and youth based non-profit organizations.

At TaKorean, one can enjoy a choice of Korean style Bulgogi beef, tangy chicken, or caramelized tofu tacos topped with fresh spicy or mild slaw, cool lime crème, Sriracha Chili sauce, fresh cilantro and sesame seeds on top of warm corn tortillas. Enjoy your meal while listening to some great music at your favorite downtown park bench on your lunch break or late night outside of your favorite place to unwind on weekends. This newest fusion blend has taken over the West Coast in recent years, and is sure to leave an impression on the DC street food scene in the weeks to come!

Add another to your food truck lists! While I’m excited to check out the tasting, it looks like they still need a bit of financing before the truck hits the streets.

From an email:

The Purveyors Of Rolling Cuisine – PORC – invite you to enjoy free samples of their menu this Sunday, August 1st from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Duffy’s Pub (2106 Vermont Avenue NW). On offer will be:

* Old-fashioned brisket sandwiches, smoked low and slow for 16 hours over hickory and applewood;
* Pulled pork, locally raised, lovingly rubbed in secret spices, and so flavorful it doesn’t even need BBQ sauce;
* BLT, featuring our own thick-cut, applewood-smoked bacon, heirloom tomato and lettuce on texas toast.
* Market-basket veggie burgers made from 12 vegetables and grains, including high-protein quinoa, sweet potato, squash, carrot and broccoli; and
* Great sides made from whatever is fresh and delicious from the farmers markets of the District.

According to their twitter page @CapMac describes itself as:

“Introducing The District’s newest food truck specializing in the best fresh pasta dishes in The Nation’s Capitol”

Do you like the idea of a fresh pasta dishes truck?

I’m still waiting for the Lobster Roll truck.

Do you have a current favorite food truck? What food truck would you like to see next? I’ve heard folks pining for a melted cheese truck…
