On Friday (then) Mayor Gray issued one of his final press release:

“Following a series of meetings between District Department of Transportation (DDOT) officials and State Safety Oversight, Mayor Vincent C. Gray said the DC Streetcar is expected to be ready for passenger use the week of January 19, 2015.

“DDOT and District safety inspectors continue to work together to open the DC Streetcar to passenger service. Safety continues to be our top priority. And while we know that the first day of service is going to be a great day for District residents, we don’t want to rush for the sake of rushing,” said Mayor Gray. “With that in mind, though, I am now delighted to report that the week of January 19, 2015 is the target for getting H Street up to full speed.”

Last week we learned that DDOT had selected a team to complete H Street/Benning Road streetcar line. Thanks to all who sent in links to the Washington Post article:

D.C. Council member Marion Barry has launched a last ditch effort to slow or derail the city’s planned street car line on H Street, arguing it’s not been well-thought out and is too expensive for the number of riders it will serve.

Council member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3), chairwoman of the Committee on the Environment, Public Works and Transportation, said Barry’s resolution could delay council approval by at least 45 days. Cheh warns that could increase the price of the contract.

“Dear PoP,

I was walking home today along 14th St. in Columbia Heights and noticed this pile of steel in the middle of the road where demolition of the street is taking place.

It appears this is the old streetcar track from the line that used to run up 14th street during the first half of the 1900’s

As someone who loves old photos of neighborhoods, and any urban archaeological relic that speaks of a time gone by, this was a goldmine for me.

It made me a little sad to see them there, as I was the only one even looking at them, and thinking about how important they were when they once linked this part of the city to downtown D.C.
People drove by, horns were honking, a fire engine came blaring through, people strolled along with their headphones on, and others just gazed straight ahead without even glancing over to wonder what this discarded pile of junk even was.

I rushed home to get my camera and snapped some photos.”

Super cool. I look forward to their new cousins on H St, NE and later Georgia Ave, NW to become active!

I thought this was a bit odd and also very cool. It is randomly on the side of rowhome by the park at 11th and Monroe. Apparently it is of a trolley from 1890. A bit random, yeah? Anyone know if there was a trolley line on 11th Street back in the day?
