From the Mayor’s Office:

“n coordination with the Bowser Administration, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, has issued a design/build contract to Hensel Phelps Construction Co., to convert the Walter E. Washington Convention Center into an alternate care facility to support the District’s response to coronavirus (COVID-19).

“While our goal is to never use the Convention Center, we must have the capacity to support a potential increase in COVID-19 patients,” said Mayor Bowser. “We thank the Army Corps, FEMA, and Events DC for their continued partnership during this public health emergency.”

Through a phased construction approach, 500 beds will be set up by the first week in May with the remaining 1,000 beds completed by the end of May. The plan converts the Convention Center’s three halls, approximately 473,000 square feet, into a facility to treat low-acuity patients. Low-acuity patients are non-ICU patients that do not require a ventilator. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I go usually go to Hair Cuttery in Dupont Circle, because they have really affordable hair cuts. I know that my usual guy lives paycheck to paycheck so I was concerned. Hair stylists live off tips much like waiters. I reached out to my stylist and he said Hair Cuttery has done nothing to help them during this time. I sent my stylist money via CashApp, but there are 21 stylists at the Dupont Hair Cuttery. I started a GoFundMe to try and bring attention to the situation- maybe you could help spread the word?”

“Dear PoPville,

While this has medical waste issue has been consistent June 2019, the problem has taken on special significance in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The community has to track the problem.

As of writing, approximately 129 medical masks, gloves, caps, and the like have been found in Burleith, including 42 since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic on March 11th. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I see so many of your readers are looking for ways to help, which is amazing. I have a friend who is an ESL teacher in DC, Mariel Vallano. She started a Go Fund Me page to help her students who are going hungry. Mariel is doing wonderful work to help her students whose families can’t afford milk or bread, let alone laptops. But there are many families at her school who need help. These sweet children she teaches want to learn and succeed but many go to bed with tummy aches because they haven’t eaten since breakfast. Mariel’s students tell her they live in constant fear – not having food, being evicted, or worse. (more…)
