Well, these storefronts at the corner of 9th and N, NW have been vacant for a super long time. It looks like Independence Bank will be taking most of them over. I’ll have to file this under better than vacant. But, I’m serious with this one, would you rather have a CVS in this location?

In one of the comments earlier in the week a reader noted this proliferation of independent ATMs around U Street. Back in Sep. 2007 I wondered why there were no Chevy Chase Bank ATMs in Petworth, Columbia Heights and U Street. (Turned out Columbia Heights has one but Petworth and inexplicable U Street metro doesn’t have one.) It still seems crazy to me that the U Street metro doesn’t have a Chevy Chase ATM. Who’s with me on that? I suppose that contributes to the indy ATMs around U Street but also as U Street becomes a huge nightlife spot, I suppose people need their cash. Do you think the U Street metro will get a Chevy Chase ATM anytime soon? (If Chevy Chase doesn’t go out of business that is.)

This is of course the PNC bank located at Wisconsin and M. I wonder if they’ll need to chip the gold off this property to avoid going into foreclosure…

I used to think Chevy Chase Bank ATMs were ubiquitious in Washington DC. Then I needed to get money. I realized that Chevy Chase has many commericials touting its numerous ATMs in the metro system. Well, that apparently doesn’t apply to many of those who live on the Green Line. If you want to get money in Shaw, U Street, or Petworth you better be prepared because you won’t find an ATM at the metro. So what is up with this blatant disrepect? Clearly in U Street, there are dozens of bars, restaurants and shops, no? So how on earth could the master planner’s not have put an ATM there? Do they think the Green Line stops are unsafe for an ATM? It is ludicrous and unacceptable. I used to think very highly of Benjamin Franklin. Now, he has become tainted by his affiliation…
