Wuh? I hadn’t heard about this before. Back in May the original Mocha Hut (coffee shop) in 14th Street Heights reopened. Well, now I’m really confused. Does anyone know if they just changed names or if ownership changed? Who’s got the scoop?

I think I may have shown this sign once back in the day but I wanted to include it in the “capturing sweet city signs” feature. It’s located up in 14th Street Heights around Allison or Buchanan (via an alley).

Well, I’m dying to here what you guys think about this one! There’s always been lots of controversy about upper 14th Street and which neighborhood it falls under. Just last week we were discussing whether or not the Red Derby was in Petworth or Columbia heights. Renaming neighborhoods or parts of neighborhoods has always been controversial. Case in point – North of Mass Ave or NOMA.
So here’s the scoop. Currently, there are discussions about renaming the area on 14th Street from Monroe north to Shepherd. The name will be – Tivoli North. Or Tivoli North Corridor. Personally, I think it’s a great name. I know that Columbia Heights technically goes as far north as Spring St. Road but I believe the area from Monroe Street on north has it’s own distinct flavor. So what do you think about the name Tivoli North – Thumbs up or down? Any alternative suggestions?

Upper 14th Street was a treasure trove for me this week. This one is pretty sweet, yeah? Check out how there is an “open” sign right in the middle. Sadly, I didn’t go in to see what type of store this is. Anyone from North Country recognize it?

Even though all of the developments are fairly recent, sometimes I find it hard to remember what Columbia Heights looked like just a couple of years ago. Heading north on 14th Street kind of brings back the memory, but it seems as though development is even creeping up that way. Little by little new store fronts are popping up further up the road, perhaps setting the stage for a massive overhaul of the neighborhood, or perhaps just making a relatively run down “Main Street” a little more neighborhood-friendly. Personally, I am hoping for the latter, but either way I was pretty excited to discover Esther’s Treasures.

Just past the Mocha Ground at 4277 4722 14th Street, Esther’s Treasures has been open for just over a year. In fact just this past weekend they held an anniversary party and, for the entire month of December, if you spend $35 or more you get a 25% discount! Esther Williams, the owner and namesake, is a long time DC resident and something of a local celebrity. She’s actually a professional singer and is married to Davey Yarborough who is also a professional musician as well as the Chairman of the Instrumental Music Program at the Duke Ellington School. Continues after the jump. (more…)

A few months ago I highlighted a shop that had recommendations for what it should become. Well, I spotted another not too far away at 14th and Crittenden. Although, unlike the last spot this one seems to be super fly. What business do you think would be most viable in this corner spot? (more…)

Check out the chicken on the right sitting in a pot getting cooked with a cold drink in its hand. Beautiful. Close up of the chicken after the jump. (more…)

I love discovering these old faded painted on signs. For some reason most of them are for storage places.

A reader has been a big fan of this Ethiopian Restaurant on 14th and Crittendon. By the by I think Crittendon is probably the weirdest name I’ve heard for a street. Crtittendon, say it a few times. Just like banana. Banana is very weird word as well if you say it a few times. And if you drink a lot beers. Sorry back to the Ethiopian Restaurant. Has anyone eaten here? The reader sent me this photo but I’m actually, also, quite intrigued by “Ana’s” next door. I dig the take out Pupusas sign.

According to a commenter this Mocha Hut in 14th St. Heights will be reopening in two weeks.
