International Migratory Bird Day

Where: Smithsonian’s National Zoo | 3001 Connecticut Ave., NW Washington, DC 20008

Date: Saturday, May 6th, 10am-2pm

Admission: Free

Learn about the wildlife in our backyard and see science in action at this celebration of birds that come near and far to stop by our city. Scientists from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center will be banding local resident and migratory birds, just as they would when conducting research in the field. There will be games, crafts, and challenges to learn about birds. There will be a free tasting of coffee that creates bird habitat. See, hear and learn about these amazing creatures from the scientists who study them!”

chicken

There had been rumors of a chicken prowling the streets of Cleveland Park but never before had she be caught on film. Thanks to a reader for sending from 36th and Macomb: “Backyard Chicken on the lam?”

Making a run for it before it’s too late?

If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

coyote
Photo by PoPville flickr user Maggie Koziol

The sighting was reported on the Cleveland Park Listserv Wednesday afternoon:

“Saw a huge coyote run across Woodley Road into Tregaron today about noon. It looked like a small wolf – I thought it was a deer at first. These actually mated with wolves on their way east through Canada.”

This is not the first sighting in the Cleveland Park area. Also, back in 2014 a dog was attacked by coyotes in Rock Creek Park near the Golf Course. And last August a reader thought they spotted a Coywolf in SW.

More shots after the jump. (more…)

falcon

Thanks to Sara Multanen for sending:

“I recently stayed at the Double Tree motel in Silver Spring, MD and this peregrine falcon is nesting right outside the window on the 12th floor and currently has 4 eggs. It was a treat to observe this beautiful creature up close for the 4 days that I was there. I mentioned it at the front desk–they knew about the falcon but were unaware of the eggs.”

tortoise

Well this is a first! Thanks to J. for sending:

“Not a raptor, but… Perhaps still of interest? Ed. Note: Hell yes. Apologies for the delay in posting (this and all other tips/emails) as I was out of town last Wed.-Sun.

I saw this tortoise toddling along the center of Logan Circle on Wednesday afternoon. This guy definitely did not belong there, and I didn’t see anyone who might have potentially been its owner. I called animal control, and I hope it is in a more appropriate environment now.”

Thanks to John for sending another shot of our special little guy, who actually looks a bit terrifying here, “near 9th and Farragut in Petworth! He comes by every week.”
