1200 S Street, NW

Ed. Note: A new date for a lighting ceremony to open the sculpture to the public will be announced soon.

Thanks to Cultural DC for reaching out with the details:

“Commissioned by CulturalDC and supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities through the Public Art Building Communities Grant, Sandy Williams IV will create a 6ft wax replica of the Lincoln Memorial to be installed at Garrison Elementary School in Northwest Washington, DC. The installation is a direct commentary on DC’s history of Civil War-era Contraband Camps, refugee camps that housed formerly enslaved and free African Americans. Camp Barker was positioned where Garrison Elementary now stands. (more…)

Thanks to Gunnar, Kinsey and everyone else for sending:

“Wanted to share this 6 foot wax candle of Abraham Lincoln at Garrison elementary school on 11th and S Street, NW. TBD on when/if they will light it.”

“I guess my question is, are they going to put a permanent statute of Lincoln there after they burn down the wax version?” (more…)

14th and Irving Street, NW

Thanks to T. for sending: “Saw workers peeling back white window coverings to reveal the sign on my morning commute. I’m almost thinking it’s a leftover from wawa days, but they didn’t have “coming soon” signs when they were open

Wawa closed here back in June 2022.

Think Wawa could really be coming back or just an old sign?

Update from another reader:

“I live in that building. I believe that sign is from before the walls went up behind that window and before the outside of the windows were covered up, so an old sign.”

“Dear PoPville,

I live off corcoran st nw and 16th st nw, and at least 5 times when I’ve been out walking my dog past 10pm, I’ve seen someone open their high up window of this apartment building and dump popcorn all over the sidewalk. Is this a sacrificial offering to the pigeon gods? A new trend? Do they keep watching bad movies that sully their buckets of popcorn??”
