“Dear PoP,

When I got out of the movies at Gallery Place last night around 10pm
they had crime scene tape running from the theater all the way out to
the chipotle. There were lots of cops and other emergency personnel
and a firetruck on the street outside. My friend said she saw blood in
the cordoned off area. And of course none of the cops would say what
happened.

Then when I got off the metro at U St. 15 min. later there was a
similar scene. The area that is right in front of the entrance was
cordoned off and metro police cars were crammed in every which way
blocking U St. from 13th to 12th. Didn’t see any blood, but there were
a lot of angry teenagers yelling about harassment.

I didn’t get a crime alert and the only thing I could think of was
that there must have been some retaliations from the earlier fight at
Union Station. Please let me know what you can find out?”

Anyone know what happened at U St?

The following sponsored post was written by Green DC Realty

Just about everyone is familiar with Mount Vernon and Bloomingdale neighborhoods these days, although have you really had a chance to explore some of the great real estate opportunities around and about these NW places?

Across Bloomingdale you are struck by the laid back pace of things while hanging out at Big Bear Cafe and then wondering over to the Farmers Market to grab some farm fresh produce. Well that is Bloomingdale and with so many great Victorian style buildings (now condos) in the area it reminds you of what things might have been like a century ago.

As for Mount Vernon Square, one of the communities which has undergone a fairly dramatic transformation with the revitalized convention center district in the middle, a surge in amenities has made its way across the community with new bars and cafes lining themselves up on either side of the convention center.

The tours are a great way to see a cross-section of the condo options available in each neighborhood, as well as getting a feel for the neighborhoods themselves. Both tours are free and there is no required commitment, which means attendees can just relax, ask questions, and learn.

The Green DC Realty Team will be holding condo tours in each of the neighborhoods at 11am and 1pm ( both tours will be held twice ).

“The goal is to provide folks on the tour an easy, valuable way to get to know the real estate of a neighborhood but without the usual pressure to buy a home,” said Green DC Realty’s Mike Kiefer. This weekend’s tours are part of a weekly series. Email Mike to learn what neighborhoods future tours will feature.

Here are the details:

I’ve often admired these homes on 13th St, NW just a bit north of Cardozo but I never realized one was a pop up.

“Dear PoP,

I live on newton between 14th and 16th, and had my car window bashed in last night (and laptop stolen) right outside my house. One of my roommates had the same thing happen a couple months back. any resources for dealing with this kind of thing?

I filed a police report, but any other tricks you know of to try to get it back? maybe pawn shops in the area or something?”

I’m sorry to hear about this. I can imagine how frustrating this must be. I hope folks follow my PSA and never ever leave valuables in their cars.

But to the original question – has anyone ever been able to track down stolen goods? Perhaps visiting pawn shops or craigslist? Any suggestions?

“I knew from the age of eight that I wanted to be in the Army. I had an uncle who was in the military who I really looked up to. He said that I had to find my own motivation and couldn’t join just because of him. As I got older, I realized that there wasn’t anything else that struck my interest like the Army did. I looked at colleges, but they didn’t appeal to me.

“My senior year of high school, September 11th happened and then one of my best friends from high school, Giovanni Maria, died fighting in Afghanistan a few months later. People thought that his death might push me away from the military, but it didn’t. I remember talking to Giovanni before he passed and telling him to wait a few more months for me to graduate, so we could be over there together kicking some ass. He died before I could get over there. He was 19 and I felt like I owed it to him to join the Army. I joined at 18 and it still feels right eight years later, even after my injury. I plan to stay in for the full twenty years.

“During my third tour in Iraq, my Humvee was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) on December 21, 2007. We were out on patrol when we heard that another Company had been hit and one of my buddies, George Howell, was killed by an IED. We were on our way to help them when my truck got hit by an IED. The vehicle flipped over and I was thrown from the Humvee. I remember the explosion and the orange fire ball and then the next thing I knew I was on the ground and couldn’t sit up. I figured that when you are wearing 60 pounds of armor and you get knocked on your back, you are like a turtle who has been turned over and can’t turn back. When the other guys came over to me, they wouldn’t let me sit up because they knew that I was in trouble. They put me on a board and onto a helicopter. I blacked out and woke up in Germany. I broke my back, most of my ribs, and my right lung collapsed. Now, I am completely paralyzed and will be in this chair indefinitely. Most of the other guys in my vehicle got some rather significant injuries, too. One kid lucked out and didn’t have one scratch on him.
