I thought this was a rather disturbing report from MPD:

“My parents are both in the beauty business. Being Colombian, beauty was always something really important to them. My Mom won a beauty pageant in Colombia and still today, she prides herself on having good taste and looking good. Growing up, I had to tell all of my ex-boyfriends to stop checking my Mom out! I guess you can say that she is holding on to what she’s got really well.

“For me, I appreciate beauty, but try and keep things simple. I was born and raised in Cleveland Park, and even though we would go to Colombia for the whole summer every other year, I was more into grunge rock and spending time in my neighborhood. Cleveland Park was such a safe and nice place to grow up. I have so many nice memories of this place. As kids, we had a running tab at the 7-11 when it was owned by the Koreans. When we were locked out of the house, the firemen would come let us in for free. The nice manager of the People’s Drugstore used to give me free milkshakes. The cashier at the Safeway used to call me Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. It was a really nice community and a great place to raise kids.

“Since I also spent a lot of time in Colombia, I appreciate feeling connected to those two communities. I learned a lot from my Colombia culture, but I also don’t like that facade where everything has to be perfectly done. Down there, everyone is so polished and finished because you are judged on looks there. Even when you go to a bank, all of the top offices are filled with these perfectly manicured women with mini-skirts and make up. I guess that is how women get ahead down there.

On the heels of yesterday’s discussion about the recent violence around the 1300 block of Pennsylvania Ave, SE a resident asked MPD:

“I’ve heard it is better than pepper spray because it shoots a greater distance (20-30)feet. Also heard both yes and no regarding legality. And just what IS legal in DC? Mace? Pepper Spray? Would be a horrible thing to be arrested due to using a spray while warding an attacker.”

MPD quickly responded:

“An item like wasp spray- although legal to address bees, is not legal to possess with the intent to use unlawfully. Another example would be a carpet knife- has legitimate uses, but if being carried around for illegal purposes then the possession would be illegal.”

Brings up an interesting question – what are the legal means for self defense when walking the streets? As the original question asked – would you really be arrested for using wasp spray to ward off an attack?

“After I graduated from the University of Maryland, I went to go work on Capitol Hill in 1981 to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I got an entry-level job with Senator Percy from Illinois because I could type fast and Xerox. When our Christmas party came around, some other staffers and I decided to put on a show, mostly as a way of laughing at ourselves. We were working on serious issues all day at work, so it was a nice way to add some levity.

“We performed at the party and thought we might get fired or someone would tell us to stop. As neither happened, we just kept going and doing events here and there. About four years into performing, someone offered us money to play a law firm dinner. We thought it would be nice to finally be able to reimburse performers for parking, so we did it. From there, we started getting offered more jobs to play banquets and dinners that needed entertainment. We never had that moment of sitting and deciding to form a business. The Capitol Steps just grew over time.

I’ve been following the discussions on the 1st District MPD listserv very closely and I’m horrified. It is very upsetting to read about robberies and shootings but there is something all-together horrifying to read about unprovoked attacks. One resident writes:

“Around 7pm tonight [Monday], I walked by a group of police interviewing a single white woman who was attacked in front of Mangialardos. I asked the police if they had any descriptions of the suspects as I would be out walking my dog for another 30 minutes or so and would keep an eye out. They said they were not sure of any descriptions, however, I overheard the young woman sitting in the front of the police cruiser say she was just walking along and somebody came up and attacked her for no reason.

Two days in a row on the same block around.”

Ed. Note: Many commenters on PoP referenced an earlier beating on Sunday night:

“The attack was at 13th and Penn. SE, 4 guys attacked a girl carrying groceries and knocked some of her teeth out. Didn’t rob her or anything, just attacked and ran.”

MPD David Kamperin responds to the first resident above:

“These two random attacks are disturbing and this type of violence should shock the conscious within this safe community. Before this second assault we moved some members in the area- officers were within a few blocks when this occurred. Additionally uniform and tactical officers will continue to patrol to prevent further attacks as our detectives investigate these. We have had some valuable information from witnesses and hopefully we will be able to identify the assailants shortly.”

This has been a bad week all around…

From MPD:

“Units received a call for a shooting at 8th and Delafield Pl NW. Upon arrival, a male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds was located and transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced. The Homicide Branch is handling this investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-888-919-CRIME.”

I’m assuming this is some sorta remnant from Halloween but if you’re not expecting it, it is a bit disturbing. I still can’t tell what this is supposed to be. Of course I do scare rather easily…
