“Sorry about the crummy cell phone picture, but here’s a shot of our Saturday garden haul. Tomatoes, squash, carrots, onions, kale, basil, and hot and sweet peppers. Some of your readers might pass by our garden – it’s right off the sidewalk on Upshur west of New Hampshire. Unfortunately we got pretty bad blight on our tomatoes so the garden isn’t look so hot right now.”

Holy cow that’s a huge haul!

If your garden has been kind to you, send a couple of photos with your neighborhood to princeofpetworth(at)gmail with Fruits (and Vegetables) of Your Labors in the subject line.

“Dear PoP,

I was walking south from the Columbia Hts metro along 14th between Irving and Columbia about forty minutes ago [Thurs.] when I heard glass breaking. I looked up, and a youth had broken into the back window of a blue Honda, reached in, grabbed a bag, looked at me, and sped off. There was another bag left in the car that he didn’t get because he noticed about ten people watching him. He wasn’t alone – there were a group of boys his age on bikes and they left in the same direction/at the same time he did.

I rushed the two blocks home, called the police and reported the theft, along with a full description of the youth and the direction in which he rode his bike. Two minutes later, I get a call back saying that they had apprehended a subject and that the police would pick me up and drive by to see if I recognized the subject. Unfortunately, I recognized the subject as one of the boys in the group, but not the one that broke the glass and took the bag. The officer took down my info and asked me to call if I saw the subject again – chances are that he lives nearby and they can apprehend him if I can do a positive ID. We drove by the car again and the owners returned and were assessing the damage.

I was amazed at how fast the police responded. The whole response and drive by took about 15 minutes total. I can’t emphasize for our community: 1) Be vigilant. This happened on a busy street in the middle of the day, and I made sure to get a good look at his face. 2) Please don’t leave anything in your car that’s visible from the street, even a busy street like 14th.”

From MPD:

“Tonight [Wed.] Officer Copeland was on patrol in the 5000 Block of North Capital Street Northwest when he heard gunshots coming from the area of First Street Northwest. Officer Copeland immediately alerted units in the area and they converge. Officer Copeland and members of the Fourth District Crime Suppression Team began to canvass the area in the rear of the 5000 block of First Street Northwest. The officers heard what the believed to be someone “racking” and loading a semiautomatic handgun. The officers then heard a door slam. This area was in a very secluded area that can only be reached on foot. The members continued to look in the area and found several fresh cartridge casings in the area and were able to determine what apartment the suspect fled into.

The members then obtained an Emergency District of Columbia Search and Seizure Warrant for the apartment. Once the members entered the apartment they were able to seize a .380 semiautomatic handgun and ammunition matching the cartridge casings that were found outside the residence. A suspect has been positively identified and members are currently working on obtaining an arrest warrant for him.

The recovery of this handgun and the identification of the suspect were only through the coordination and determination of Officer Copeland the C.S.T. Team and the United States Attorneys Office.

Great Work Officer Copeland and all members involved.”

The narrative sounds like something out of George Pelecanos novel. Awesome.

The reader writes about the one above:

“Phone photo quality may well be too poor for your purposes but when my wife and I stumbled across the attached Datsun Fairlady (heck of a model name) we both thought “sweet city ride”. Was parked on Euclid and Champlain, right across from City Bikes. It was sunset, so the light was poor, Heck of a car, though.”

The one below was found by a reader in the Rayburn House Office Building.

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

“Dear PoPville,

I recently noticed that the sign for the Hot Trout Grill has been removed. The business has been closed for some time, so I am wondering if something is going to replace it. Hot Trout Grill was located at 8 Florida Ave., NW near the corner with N. Capitol St. Maybe it was just removed for some reason, but hopefully, something new will be opening there in the near future.”

Anyone happen to hear any scuttlebutt on this property? I did love this sign (from their Facebook page:
