Having grown up in Alabama, I am well versed in the art of outdoor lounging activities. My parents have owned the same white metal glider since before I was born – it still sits gracefully on their back patio, offering the best summertime view of Coneflowers and Black-Eyed Susans I’ve ever seen. I know DC folks love their spring and summer outdoor time too, and gliders aren’t just for Southerners, so today’s Listed District Phenomenal Finds serves up some Southern-style gliding goodness for your enjoyment.

When I see these classic relics of Americana, it warms my heart and brings to mind a few things from home: Old people. Sweet Tea. Old people drinking sweet tea. My parents (unrelated to previous ‘old people’ reference…). Hot, quiet, Alabama summer nights. The green, green grass of my Dad’s backyard. Hickory chips on the grill.

I could go on, but I won’t…instead, I’d like to plop down in one of these vintage metal gliders or chairs with my glass of sweet tea (preferably served in a ridiculously large plastic cup leftover from a circa 1994 Auburn football game…). Any one of these Craigslist options would make my DC rowhouse feel miles away from the sirens of Georgia Avenue, the construction of Sherman Avenue, and, most disturbingly, the psychotic wailings of my ill-behaved seven year old neighbor…

Missed out on these Craigslist options? Never fear! Check out Vintage Porch Gliders, a few colorful options on Etsy, CandyBouncer.com, and even Lowes (can you believe it?!). Are you lucky enough to already own one of these gems and are ready to refurbish? Here are some tips to get started (I know from experience that your best friend will be a sandblaster…).

It’s been a long time since I spotted a seriously sweet vestibule. And all that time a friend of mine had this amazing one in Bloomingdale. If anyone else has a cool vestibule they’d be willing to share – please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail

The tiles on this one are amazing:

They say that the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. So I’ll admit it: I have a problem. I have a full-blown, out-of-control case of spring fever. Actually, I think it all started last fall when I planted the first of my very own bulbs – daffodils and crocus. My hard work has been rewarded this spring with a yard full of gorgeous daffodils, carefully tended phlox, and creeping, blooming periwinkle. But it hasn’t stopped there. Last weekend I spent both days planting more bulbs – hopefully that hard work will be rewarded with summer-blooming poppy anemones and dahlias!

Today’s Listed District Phenomenal Finds focuses on a few CL items to help you get into the spring planting and yard work mood. One of the next big projects at our house is creating a patio using pavers – whether you prefer concrete or bricks, I’ve found a few good CL options to get you started. Another dream of mine is to have a compost bin and rain barrell. Every garden benefits from compost, and a rain barrel will help you keep that lawn watered without breaking the bank (…and don’t get me started on the many GREEN benefits of rain barrels).

So get out there and get your hands dirty! It’s good for you, good for the environment, and good for your neighborhood. And after you’re finished, reward your hard work by firing up the amazing Green Egg grill I found as a bonus – it’s just amazing as you’ve heard!

Back in Nov. 2011 it looked like a cactus store :) would be opening up at the long vacant building on the southwest corner of 12th and S St, NW. I just noticed that the cactus were gone and the inside was completely cleaned out. Anyone hear new rumors as to who might be moving in?

Barrister bookcases are wonderful in more ways than one. Obviously, they’re perfect for storing and protecting books, but I love seeing them used in other creative ways. Maybe use them in your bathroom to store linens?

In our house, we’ve got a steel set (salvaged from NASA!) as well an oak set – neither of which actually holds books…

I’m always quoting other people, but why reinvent the wheel? Apartment Therapy tells us that “Lighting can make a small space seem larger, a modern room look warmer, and a painted wall feel richer. When you really put some thought into your lighting, it shows—it’s the last layer of decorating that makes all the difference.”Why, why are you so wise, Apartment Therapy?! Teach me your ways! Lamps are some of the most popular posts over at Listed District, so today’s

Phenomenal Finds provides what I hope are plenty of interesting options to help you with that “last layer of decorating.”

Last week we learned that the National Cathedral still needs $18 million worth of restoration work to deal with damage from the earthquake that hit August 23, 2011. Walking around town, I’ve realized there are a lot of smaller buildings that need help too. In particular, I’m sorta terrified of the damage at the funeral home on the corner of Randolph and Georgia Ave, NW. It looks like the whole thing up top could come crashing down.

“A take on the bench at the dining table, church pews immediately impart a feeling of age and architectural weight. And the right pew, pulled up to a big dining room table, can act as a solid bench or banquette.”

These words of wisdom from theKitchn bring us to today’s Listed District Phenomenal Finds. From rustic to glam, Craigslist has some pretty swanky church pew options available this week. Aside from kitchen table seating, I’ve seen pews used in foyers and porches. I’d love to add one to my mudroom, as a place to throw dirty boots and coats.
