Dream Kites discussion:

Art Museum Of The Americas
201 18th Street NW
Thursday, December 6th, 2012
6:00pm – 8:00pm | FREE!

Join artist Miguel Luciano, curator Raquel de Anda and Favianne Rodriguez of CultureStrike to discuss Lucianos Dream Kites, a kite-based public art workshop and action carried out in DC as part of The Ripple Effect: Currents of Socially Engaged Art, an exhibition co-sponsored by Washington Project for the Arts and Art Museum of the Americas.

Luciano originally designed his kite-based project during the military occupation on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico with a group of local youth, as well as youth from New York City. The workshops specically focused on building kites while expressing forms of identity, nationhood, and solidarity; themes that have carried through in each iteration of the project. The nal act of ying kites over the military fence, or as Luciano states, transgressing borders from above, produced a poetic and provocative act of civic disobedience. For The Ripple Effect, Luciano collaborated with United We Dream and CultureStrike to devise a similar workshop series with a group of undocumented youth in Washington, DC. On November 3rd, the workshop participants flew their kites on the National Mall, creating an ephemeral, yet poignant monument that symbolizes new visions of freedom and shared dreams. The November 6th discussion provides an opportunity for Luciano, curator Raquel de Anda, and Favianna Rodriguez of CultureStrike to discuss the project, its goals and outcomes, and the role artists can play in addressing pressing social issues.
