This is kind of a random question, but does anyone have any idea what the oldest trees in DC are? I ask because there is a pretty massive tree in front of my house (see photo above), and it seems like it has been there longer than even this part of the neighborhood (Woodridge).”

The event, which featured a demonstration of the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) innovative new app, highlighted the value of and need for community assistance in keeping newly planted trees hydrated. “The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin the annual spraying of the female ginkgo tree Monday, May 1. The spraying will occur from 9 pm through 6 am, weather permitting.
The annual spraying eliminates the formation of ginkgo fruit, which emits an offensive smell and falls on sidewalks and roadways. DDOT will use the same spray that it has used for the past 20 years, Shield-3EC 24(C).
Residents are advised that spraying will begin in Ward 5 and proceed to Wards 4, 3, 2, 1 and 6. There are no female ginkgo trees in Wards 7 and 8.
Spraying will occur during the evening for several nights. There is no need to move vehicles. For questions, please contact DDOT at (202) 671-5133 or visit here for a map of all the female ginkgo trees and more information.”
“Dear PoPville,
On the north side of the 1200 block of Girard Street NW. The PODS company made three separate trips to their “Pod” to try to collect it and to inflict the catastrophic damage to this tree. When confronted, the driver of the truck just got in his vehicle and drove off.
I have included photos of the damage all around the “pod” and the contact info for the person who obtained a public space permit for the “pod” in the first place.
I have reached out to DC’s Urban Forestry to come out right away to try to cut away the damaged limbs and save this tree.
But what about this company and their cavalier destruction of city property and an undeniable public good like a young and growing street tree? Is this PODS company criminally liable for their “smash and run” destruction? (more…)
