Thanks to Rose for sending the photo and providing some info:

“So it’s a free ride (tips appreciated) from Wonderland (11th and Kenyon) to Looking Glass Lounge (Georgia and Princeton) back and forth. There are two pedicabs that circulate. One only does the WL and LGL route while the other is open to the possibility of doing other short neighborhood runs meaning Columbia Heights and parts of Mt. Pleasant, Petworth, Adams Morgan but its up to the drivers discretion. In short there is one pedicab that does the loop and the other does the loop and possible other “area” locations. For the other area locations they have to pay and that rate is based on the driver.”

This is a pretty cool idea.

The title on this photo from cacophony76 made me laugh, it says simply, “I don’t wanna know…”. Perfect.

And I’ve been meaning to ask those that ride the red line – how are you surviving? I’m still hearing that there are 30 minute delays. For those that ride the red line regularly: Have some of you switched from the subway metro to metro bus or other ways? Are the waits really an extra half hour everyday? How are you not going crazy?

I’m hearing that a car crashed at the corner of 13th and Euclid Streets, NW Saturday night around 8-10pm. Apparently the guy who crashed the car fled the scene and a helicopter was deployed in the search. The damage seems to be limited to a broken fence/wall and a light post that was knocked over. It must have been quite the scene though because when I was walking up 13th Street Sunday afternoon I heard two separate groups of people talking about it. So if you heard a lot sirens and saw the helicopter spotlight this was likely the cause. If anyone got a picture of the crash please send my way and I’ll update this post.

Back in October ’08 I asked about all the stores on 18th Street, NW for lease in Adams Morgan. This past weekend I was able to speak with a longtime Adams Morgan business owner, Lynn Skynear, who’s been in Adams Morgan for 20 years. Skynear is located at 2122 18th Street, NW.

First let’s talk about the plans for this space, which are pretty cool. As you can see the third floor is for lease and now there is a sign saying the first floor is for lease.

Ms. Skynear explained that in this economy small furniture stores are having a tough time and therefore one needs to be creative. And here’s the creativity:

Skynear will remain a part of this space on the second or third floors. But on the first floor Ms. Skynear is looking for a tenant to open a European style bakery and cafe with an outdoor seating area. Skynear explains, “you have to give folks more than one reason to come here”. And to fill out the second and third floors, Skynear would like to see a consortium of Skynear furniture along with potential partners including the following possible vendors – clothing, jewelery, and/or pottery. She envisions folks having a coffee and cake downstairs and then shopping upstairs.

Ms. Skynear also addressed the issue of the many storefronts for lease on 18th Street. The only way Adams Morgan will become a destination spot beyond nightlife, she believes, is with better public transportation. Specifically she would like to see one of the new Circulator buses coming down 18th Street. She believes this is the only way to prevent other small businesses from leaving the area. And the only way this will be possible is if the Mayor embraces the neighborhood. She left me with these words: “I’m hoping the Mayor will embrace the place in which he grew up in.”

So what do you guys think, do you like the idea of a bakery cafe on the first floor? And what are your thoughts on a Circulator bus coming to 18th Street?

16th Street just south of Park Road, NW is blocked to pedestrians. I understand that there is a turn lane here. But can’t they put up a yield to pedestrian sign or something like that? First of all the (not so) temporary barricades look terrible. But secondly, and perhaps I’m just being lazy, it’s a pain in the ass to walk all the way around when you just want to proceed north on 16th Street. Am I crazy? Or should they come up with some type of solution to remove these barricades?

“Dear PoP,

I gotta say, this morning, I called to get the time for the 64 bus at Grant Circle and it was accurate to the minute! Way to go metro! If their new system works over the long haul, will make it much more viable to take the bus in this town…

Program re-started today. Had some glitches in earlier trials.

Works on-line and by phone….

Each participating stop now has a small round sign, with a phone number and a bus station ID.”

I’m not much of a bus rider but this sounds awesome. Anyone else give it a shot yet? Did you have similar results?

There is also a press release from DDOT announcing “Where’s My Bus” for the Circulator, after the jump. (more…)

Apparently in parts of Crestwood. This is near the corner of 18th and Taylor, NW. As I mentioned during the house of the day, I managed to get lost walking around Crestwood. I could’ve sworn I was walking south but somehow ended up north. Anyway, at a certain point I noticed the strangest thing – the sidewalks vanished. I had to walk in the streets like a vagabond. This is something I might expect to see in the far out suburbs or exurbs. But in the city proper. Granted, it is a very lovely quiet neighborhood, but no sidewalks. Terrible. Anyone know why the sidewalks vanish here?

Given the FQoTD about eating on the metro this seemed like an interesting follow up question. A reader sent an article from the Washington Business Journal:

“Cell phones with AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint service plans will start to work in 20 stations in D.C., Maryland and Virginia (in October).

Stations were picked based on the highest volume of passengers and include the Metro Center, Bethesda, Union Station and Crystal City stations.

By 2010, cell phone service will penetrate all 47 stations but riders passing through the underground tunnels will have to wait until 2012 to make and receive calls.”

So, will you be happy to have this option on the metro or do you think it will be terribly annoying?
