Metro will continue to advance rebuilding efforts over the weekend of December 9-11, 2011, with trains sharing the same track along portions of the Red, Blue, Orange and Green lines. The work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and continue through system closing on Sunday night.

Green/Yellow Lines
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through closing Sunday, Green Line trains will share one track between U Street and Georgia Ave-Petworth to allow for rail maintenance. Green Line trains will operate at normal weekend service levels with minor delays through the work zone. Yellow Line trains will operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq. only; customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt .Vernon Sq. should use Green Line trains to complete their trip.

Red Line
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through closing Sunday, Red Line trains will share one track in two areas: between Van Ness and Friendship Heights to allow for rail and fastener renewal, and between Takoma and Forest Glen to allow for fiber optic cable installation and platform rehabilitation. Throughout the weekend, Red Line trains will operate between Shady Grove and Glenmont every 24 minutes. Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, additional trains will operate between Van Ness and Takoma only, providing service every 12 minutes through the Downtown core.

Blue/Orange Lines
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through closing Sunday, Blue Line trains will share one track between Foggy Bottom and Arlington Cemetery and Orange Line trains will share one track between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon to allow for rail, joint and fastener renewal. Orange and Blue line trains will depart endpoint terminals every 20 minutes, resulting in trains every 10 minutes at stations served by both lines.

Dear PoPville,

Given the steady spate of broken or out-of-order metro escalators, WMATA needs to consider evolving beyond the 1960’s and adapt to the 21st century use of modern sensor-activated escalators, like technically savvy and efficient Germany (even NYC has a few), so that the escalators aren’t operating at full speed while no one is on them, thereupon reducing the wear & tear and consequently breakage. I am well aware of America’s commitment to wasting resources and that energy conservation is emasculating, but stalled escalators are not wide enough to accommodate so many commuters when functioning as clunky, expensive, stationary metal stairs.

The liability excuse is absurd.

“WMATA participated in a study by the National Institute of Building Sciences which looked at the benefits of the intermittent operation concept. The study concluded the potential for substantial liability costs in the present litigious climate would exceed the energy savings potential and will likely preclude the adoption and use of intermittent escalators in the United States.”

Interesting. I’ve never heard of these. Anyone else ever see these before?

“Metro will advance major projects to rebuild sections of the Red and Orange lines this weekend.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and continuing through system closing on Sunday, Dec. 4, buses will replace trains on the Red Line between Rhode Island Avenue and Glenmont stations. Six stations – Brookland, Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont — will be closed during this time, as Metro installs new rail, fasteners, makes automatic train control upgrades at the Silver Spring stations, installs communications cables for improved cell phone service and allows for the Maryland State Highway Administration to conduct bridge inspections. Fort Totten Station will be open for Green and Yellow Line service only; the Red Line platform will be closed.

On the Orange Line, buses will replace trains between Deanwood and Cheverly stations while personnel make structural repairs to the elevated portion of the line and perform track rehabilitation. Both Cheverly and Deanwood stations will remain open.”

“Metro will advance major track work on sections of the Blue, Yellow, Red and Orange lines this weekend (Nov. 18-20).

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, and continuing through system closing on Sunday, Nov. 20, buses will replace Metrorail trains on the Blue and Yellow lines between King Street and Pentagon City stations. Three stations — Crystal City, National Airport and Braddock Road — will be closed during this time, as Metro installs new rail ties, insulators, upgrades the surfaces underneath the rails and installs communications cables for improved cell phone service.

In addition to regular shuttle buses between Pentagon City and King Street, Metro will offer special express bus service between Metro Center and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport throughout the weekend for the benefit of airport travelers.

On the Red Line, Metro crews will continue work to stabilize a municipal water main and sewer line within Farragut North Station. The heavy construction effort requires that one Red Line track be taken out of service to create a safe work zone. Red Line trains will single track between Dupont Circle and Judiciary Square, with trains operating every 20 minutes through the affected section.”

From a DDOT press release:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) would like to advise the public about the possibility of traffic delays during the evening rush hour tomorrow.

Occupy DC has announced that on Thursday, November 17, 2011, between the hours of 2:30 PM and continuing through the evening rush hour, they plan to conduct a demonstration/march between the Key Bridge and McPherson Square.

Because any demonstration within Washington, DC always presents the possibility of causing traffic delays, the Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Police Department urge motorists to be aware of the possibility of heavy pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic between the Key Bridge, McPherson Square, and surrounding areas. We further encourage motorists to avoid the areas described and use alternate methods of transportation if possible. Additionally, motorists and pedestrians traveling in these areas should use extreme caution.”

“Metro will advance major track work on the Green Line this weekend, beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, and continuing through closing Sunday, Nov. 13. (Friday is Veterans’ Day, a federal holiday.)

Buses will replace trains between L’Enfant Plaza and Southern Avenue stations as Metro personnel install new “Guarded #8” track switches, an NTSB-recommended safety improvement. As a result, four stations — Waterfront, Navy Yard, Anacostia and Congress Heights — will be closed. Free shuttle buses will make stops outside each of the closed Metrorail stations.”

“Dear PoPville,

This morning I was waiting for the metro at Dupont station and as I was waiting, a train pulled up going in the opposite direction and one of the middle cars was literally billowing with smoke. Now, I’ve often entered a metro station only to smell something burning, but in this case a train packed with people pulled up right in front of me and you could actually visibly see the smoke rising from beneath the car. And there was a lot of smoke; it smelled absolutely horrible. The people waiting with me just stared in amazement and some even took pictures (maybe someone will read this and send it in). The packed train then took off, clearly not recognizing that one of its cars was burning.

We’ve all had issues with and complained about the metro, but I don’t recall ever reading something on this site about burning metro cars. My question to PoPville is: does anyone know what is causing it, and what, if anything, is metro doing to address the problem?”

New names announced here:

“In accordance with Board-adopted guidelines limiting primary station names to 19 characters (13 characters for transfer stations), the Board approved the following for the June 2012 map:

Navy Yard becomes Navy Yard-Ballpark.
King Street becomes King St-Old Town.
Waterfront-SEU will drop “SEU,” because the university no longer exists.
Forest Glen will be shown on the map with the universal “H” symbol to indicate the location of Holy Cross Hospital. Foggy Bottom, Shaw-Howard and Medical Center will also be shown with “H” symbols reflecting proximity of hospitals.
New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U will be renamed “NoMa-Gallaudet U.” “New York Ave” will be shown as a secondary name for one-year to assist customers during the transition.”

This weekend’s major track work:

“Buses will replace Red Line trains between Glenmont and Fort Totten, and five stations — Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont — will be closed as Metro rebuilds track, installs ties and insulators, replaces communications cables and renovates station platforms. In addition, trains will single track on the Blue/Orange lines between Foggy Bottom and McPherson Square to allow for rail renewal work.”

Extra hour of service on Sat. due to clocks pushed back:

“This Saturday, Nov. 5, Metro will operate on its normal weekend schedule until 3 a.m, even though the clocks are turned back an hour to mark the end of Daylight Saving Time.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am sure I’m not the only one confused by the way our smartrip cards now work or frustrated that I can’t get through to the 888-smartrip # before I hear the dreaded “all operators are busy, please call back later” message.

Saturday I had over $200 on my card and then Tuesday I had $48….I know they upgraded their technology, but still don’t understand how we will be able to know exactly how much $$ we will have in our accts without having to create and log into our accts on the wmata website. Do you know or does anyone know the new process??!!??
