From WMATA:

“Metro is “Working Differently” to launch several public safety initiatives that will strengthen and support customer safety and community service for those who use our transit system.

Metro Transit Police (MTPD) have strategically increased officer availability to be more visible throughout the Metrobus and Metrorail system to offer customers additional support. Officers are riding trains and buses in intervals throughout the day as part of the new safety patrol operation “HelpingHands.”

“We’ve been listening to customers over the past two months, and it’s clear that a better, safer customer experience is paramount to rebuilding ridership and customer trust,” said GM and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. “The steps we are taking are part of a larger framework that enhances the work MTPD is already implementing to improve Metro daily.”

In the coming months, Metro will hire several Crisis Intervention Specialists trained in mental health awareness and de-escalation methods. They’ll be paired with an MTPD officer or Operating staff to respond to customers with mental health disorders, intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Since the pandemic, MTPD has seen a 40 percent increase in people in need of mental health assistance. (more…)

Ed. Note: It sounds like it could be related to the 3:45pm shooting near the Petworth metro yesterday afternoon.

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what was happened on the red line yesterday? I was on a north-bound red line train around 4:15 in the afternoon, and when we got to Fort Totten, the police held the train after departing passengers got off (though those of us who were continuing north remained on the train). Officers (with guns unholstered) stood at every open door and did not allow anyone to enter the train (but also didn’t direct those of us on the train to get off). Then a group of police (with guns drawn, shields up, and “SWAT” emblazoned on uniforms) moved from car to car doing what appeared to be a sweep. (more…)

Customers will see immediate changes on digital maps throughout rail stations and on bus displays as well as on wmata.com, Trip Planner, and Next Arrivals. Destination signs on Metrobuses and announcements also will recognize new station names. Static maps will be gradually updated once new Silver Line stations and Potomac Yard Station open for passenger service.

From WMATA:

“Metro is returning more of its newest, most reliable trains to service starting Sept. 12. This marks a significant step in the restoration of all 7000-series railcars, which is key to Metro’s plan to improve train frequency for customers.

With the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission’s approval, Metro’s updated return to service plan allows the agency to safely operate up to 20 of its 7000-series trains per day, up from the current limit of eight trains. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Is it just me, or is it every time that I get to a station for a transfer (Fort Totten, L’Enfant, Metro Center, Chinatown), the connecting train is already there. But they never wait. It’s like they see another train coming, and they’re just like, NOPE, now we’re in a hurry and have a schedule to keep. (more…)

From WMATA:

“Through the end of November, Metrorail customers will be asked to complete ridership surveys that will help ensure future policy decisions reflect the needs of Metro customers.
