@infodude tweets us:
“Well this is going to be a huge cluster…@Nationals Park now has metal detectors”
How much time do think this will add before getting in?

From the Wizards facebook page:
“Black History Month is an annual celebration where we honor and recognize the contributions that African Americans have made to history. Join Monumental Sports & Entertainment as we reflect on some great inspirations of Black History. Check out our month long celebration on www.nba.com/wizards/BHM-2015 #inspire #wizardscare #BHM #nbacares #DREAM #King #Leonsis”

A reader writes yesterday:
“First official full practice for pitchers and catchers.”

For those not familiar it’s for a very good cause – from Cupid’s Undie Run:
“This Valentine’s Day weekend, come put the hilarity in charity with hundreds of half-naked runners taking to the streets in celebration of their fundraising for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.”
Two more shots after the jump. (more…)

From a press release:
“WHAT: Washington Nationals fans will have a chance to run for office when they tryout to become one of the Racing Presidents on Sunday, January 25 at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
Candidates looking to fill the shoes of George, Tom, Abe, Teddy and Bill have been invited to the Youth Baseball Academy to perform a freestyle dance, run a 40-yard dash and participate in two President Races from center field to the home dugout. In addition, each applicant will also be required to answer questions from a panel of Nationals entertainment staff members.
Racing hopefuls were pre-selected from a pool of applicants who previously submitted their cover letter and resume. Participation in the tryout is by invitation only and not open to the public. Tryouts will take place regardless of weather conditions.
Developed in 2006, the award-winning Racing Presidents are 12-foot oversized mascots who compete in the GEICO Presidents Race during the fourth inning of every Nationals home game. The popular figures can be seen promoting the team and its community efforts at Nationals Park and around the Washington region. For more information on the Racing Presidents, visit nationals.com/racingpresidents.

And in other awesome news – Nats sign Detroit’s 2013 Cy Young award winner, Max Scherzer, to a 7 year deal!! From MLB.com:
“Right-hander Max Scherzer agreed to terms on a seven-year deal with the Nationals late Sunday night, a source told MLB.com. The value of the contract is $210 million.”

We’ve talked a lot about the controversy over the use of Redskins name. At this point I’d say 90% of the folks I talk to believe another name should be used. They don’t necessarily find it offensive themselves (yet?) but they recognize that it is considered offensive by some and therefore for should be dropped. I recognize this percentage may not mirror national polls but I’m just talking about folks I speak with/write to who are living in DC.
Which leads me to my next question – can we extrapolate this to mean that it is insensitive (at the very least or flat out racist at the worst) to wear Redskins gear? I ask because I know many progressive people – pro gay marriage, pro marijuana legalization, pro affordable housing, pro you name it – and I see them wearing Redskins gear. I’m not gonna name names but some are well known in the community and it’s something I personally wrestle with as well. I think I’ve seen on TV a very prominent newscaster who has publicly stated he is against the name wearing Redskins gear also on TV. So, and I know it will be difficult to keep poor play jokes out, but do you think people who wear Redskins gear in 2015 are being insensitive (at the least) or are just sports fans supporting their team?

Anyone lucky enough to go? I saw one crazy photo of the commute home on metro – for those who went home by metro was it as nuts as it looked? But helluva game – go Caps!

“Dear PoPville,
I organize a Wizards fan happy hour group. We hold a 1 hour happy hour before each home Wizards game at a different bar in Chinatown/PennQuarter each time. The idea is for Wizards fans to interact with each other, as well as to explore the city around the arena.
Tonight we are going to Carmine’s [425 7th Street, NW] to check out their happy hour. The Wizards also gave me (through a contest) a $50 gift card so I’m going to cover a bunch of appetizers for our group. We meet up between 6pm-7pm.”
