Since 1969, Virginia Tech has served local residents, government and industry in the greater Washington, D.C., metro area.

While the planned Innovation Campus in Alexandria is anticipated to triple Virginia Tech’s local footprint, it already boasts more than 45 graduate degree and certificate programs, as well as many laboratories and research centers, spread across the region from Arlington to Leesburg.

Among those degree offerings, the Pamplin College of Business offers two different MBA program options that serve working professionals looking to advance their careers without leaving the workforce.

The Executive MBA offers an accelerated, cohort-based option for mid-career professionals. Students meet bi-monthly for weekend classes at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Ballston.

The experiential learning curriculum focuses on strategic management in a global environment with an emphasis on leadership and governance, business analytics, entrepreneurship and innovation, and globalization.

As 2019 draws to a close, we analyze the state of the DMV housing market and it’s a mixed bag — some good news for Buyers, some good news for Sellers. Low inventory and rising prices are projected for the 2020 market.

Good news for Buyers: Affordability is up. Interest rates are at historic lows and, for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage, are nearly .75% lower than they were a year ago. That’s about $150/month in savings at the median DMV home price — or $54K less in payments over the life of the loan.

Good news for Sellers: Inventory is down and prices are up. The number of new listings are down 3% versus 2018 — meaning there are more eyes on fewer properties. More Buyers combined with lower inventory fueled a 4.5% median price increase over the last 12 months. Expect price appreciation to slow in 2020 to a still respectable 2.6% regionally.

Bread for the City, the nonprofit that has been assisting the low-income population of Washington for 45 years, hopes to serve 11,000 residents this holiday season with turkey or ham family meals during its annual “Holiday Helpings” campaign. That’s 2,000 more neighbors than last year — but Bread for the City can’t do it alone.

“We firmly believe no one should have to forego holidays, celebrations and family traditions due to financial circumstances,” Bread for the City said in a statement. “That’s why we rally with our community each year to provide neighbors living on low incomes with a meal to share with loved ones.”

A contribution of $38 feeds a family of four with a sit-down meal, complete with the traditional trimmings; a donation of $152 feeds four families. Donations of any denomination are being accepted now and are easily made here. For those who wish to create their own “Holiday Helpings” fundraising drive, see this page for details.

Real Estate Fresh Finds is a weekly selection of newly-listed properties in the District, brought to you by Real Living At Home.

Featured Property of the Week: 3065 Clinton Street NE

“Beautifully updated 5 bedroom and 4 bathroom single family home in the heart of Woodridge! This home’s exterior has massive curb appeal and it continues as you enter the home. Walking up, you will notice subtle details that make this home feel special and custom such as the flower box under the living room windows, the wood gables and the built-in swing on the front porch. The main level has adapted to what many buyers now want — an open concept with some light definition.

Top floor master suite has a walk-in closet, a spacious bathroom, that is paired with a grand bedroom with vaulted ceilings. The lower level suite has versatility starting with a separate entrance and interior access. It has a kitchenette, dining area, full bathroom, and a large space to serve as second living room, a bedroom, or both! Flex space for your everyday needs or the opportunity to generate rental income. Walk out the side entrance of the lower level or out of the kitchen’s french doors to a deck that spans the length of the home in the rear. Deck overlooks the fenced in newly sodded green space.”

Other Notable Fresh Listings:

  • The Most Expensive Home of the Week, a.k.a. “The Taft Mansion,” is a 6 BR/4.5 BA detached in Georgetown with 6,500 sq. ft. across 4 levels that “has been the scene of countless elegant parties, sophisticated dinners and stylish fundraisers where Presidents, Political Leaders, Cabinet Members, Supreme Court Justices and Ambassadors rubbed elbows with business tycoons, socialites and celebrities.”
  • “The [2 BR/1 BA] property is a fixer upper [in Anacostia] and the unit is being sold in “AS IS” condition. The seller will not make any repairs to this property,” but at a $65k list price, the repair costs could be more than worth it!
  • Petworth 3 BR/2 BA interior rowhome in AS-IS condition seems a bit steep at $1M, but perhaps the inside is nicer and matches the asking price.
  • Your REO/Bank-Owned Property of the Week is a 1 BR unit in Lanier Heights that will need some renovation to bring it into the 21st century.

The folks behind the Washington National Cathedral have put together an inspiring afternoon and evening of family-friendly programming called “Holiday Light Spectacular” that will be an unforgettable visual and aural experience for all ages.

The immersive indoor light show designed by Elizabeth Coco and Atmosphere Lighting is just one part of the activities, as the historic neo-gothic cathedral is turned into a winter wonderland on Friday, December 27 at 4:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The 45-minute program, ideal for children, repeats at the same times on Saturday, December 28.

Music performed by a live orchestra will fill the Cathedral as it accompanies a screening of the 1982, 30-minute animated classic, “The Snowman,” based on the 1978 picture book by Raymond Briggs. That will be followed by musical performances of holiday songs — including singalongs such as “Silver Bells” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”– by soprano soloist Crossley Hawn, and “illustrated” by a moving light spectacular designed for the Cathedral’s vaulted ceiling and soaring columns.

Admission to the light spectacular, the animated film-with-orchestral accompaniment, and the vocal concert is $40. See this site for ticket availability. There is free parking in the Cathedral’s underground garage.

The Cathedral is at 3101 Wisconsin Avenue NW.

Join the free club that pays you for driving! Commuter Connections, the regional transportation nonprofit dedicated to making traffic less miserable and the environment cleaner, offers a program that pays drivers for starting carpool and vanpools. It’s a pretty sweet deal, and your passengers get paid as well.

What are you waiting for? Let’s jump into the pool.

The “Pool Rewards” program pays up to a $130 subsidy to those who start — and join — new carpools, after a period of 90 days using the carpool. Those driving alone to and from work each day at peak rush hour times can earn cash to help offset fuel and tolls. While commuting, passengers can earn the same amount for doing work, pleasure reading, or keeping the driver company.

That figure goes up to $200 towards new vanpools of between seven and 15 occupants, including the driver. Realizing not everyone has an 8-passenger vehicle, Commuter Connections will help arrange for the van.
