I stared at these don’t walk signs on the 1300 block of Q St, NW for like 5 minutes before I got it. First one to explain why they’re there gets a PoP t-shirt.

Panda Express is located in DC USA at 14th and Irving St, NW (on Irving St.)
This is pretty odd, right?

“Dear PoPville,
While I miss their beat-up old sign a bit at the corner of Georgia & Quincy — the one with the words “Fried” still faintly visible despite their efforts to scrape it off — the new one’s pretty nice and still has that super-happy chicken. Now if only they were open after work instead of just breakfast and lunch…”
Eat Chicken is located at the corner of Georgia and Quincy St, NW across from the Petworth metro.
So what is the PL in the photo above? Chicken place? The new logo is pretty sweet:

Below is what it looked like in June ’08.

It was a sad day when this sign came down. I was overjoyed to see it displayed prominently once again at World Class Cuts (now located at 403 K St, NW).
Best sign in the city?

I love these signs. From the Shaw listserv:
“11 out of the 19 signs for the Georgia Avenue/Pleasant Plains Heritage Trail are being installed today! The trail begins at 7th and S and ends at Georgia and New Hampshire Ave. Work on this trail began in 2007 and is now coming to fruition.
Save the date of Saturday October 15th at 11am for the official launch of the Trail on the grounds of Howard University Hospital.”

One of my favorite parts so far – a photo of of inside the old York Theater at Georgia and Princeton:

“I took the photo from behind the Iglesia Ni Cristo on the corner of Sherman and Morton. The actual repair shop is on Park Rd, NW though.”
Reliable Auto Repairing, very cool. I wonder how old that sign is?

“Dear PoPville,
Now you can enjoy fish tea along with your cock soup.”

Even though they are now defunct, I dig the old school feel of these signs. I just noticed that this one from H St, NE actually has a date on it – 11/5/62. Wild. Makes me imagine what H Street looked like back then.

We just spoke about Umi Japanese Restaurant earlier this week. Oddly this didn’t come up.
I think this one might be worse than dry creaning…
