Over the years I feel like I’ve seen every type of porch direction. I’ve seen pigs, pineapples, knights, horses, dogs, Jesus, Mary, elephants, goblins and more. But I’ve never seen an armadillo before. Awesome!

Example of one of the many beautiful sculptures in Rock Creek Church Cemetery

Back in Nov. ’10 we took a week to look at some of the beautiful sculptures at Rock Creek Church Cemetery located at Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW and near the Old Soldiers Home grounds.

The following circulated on the MPD 4D Listserv last night:

Dear Neighbors,

It is a great sadness to share with you that our cemetery has been targeted for theft of bronze. At the end of last week an 11 ft bronze work of art and other pieces were removed. This took quite an effort since the installation required a crane and at least six men to get it in place. You can imagine how the family of the deceased feels.

We believe that we offer the community a beautiful, quiet spot for walking, running and playing with children. However, we need you to help us. The security mantra of “if you see something say something is a good one.” If you are enjoying our space and see persons defacing the property or acting in a suspicious way please notify our office (202) 726-2080.

The Police Department are doing their part. Please help us so we can continue to allow public use of this space.

We’ve looked at these wild sculptures from Columbia Heights before but now they’ve got skirts and are officially the most bizarre lawn decoration/sculptures I’ve ever seen around town.

From a distance there is really nothing of note about this Dupont patio. But if you take a closer look, well, it might look nice from the patio but from the street – I just feel like I’m getting mooned:

I don’t care how many times I’ve stopped to look at these, I never stop being amazed. On the back it said the population of Mt. Pleasant was 12,000. For some reason I always thought it was bigger than that.

But back to the sculpture: Anyone happen to know how much it cost to fund this project?

I could argue that Corcoran St, NW between 16th and 19th St, NW are among the most interesting residential blocks in the city. We’ve seen it many times in the past and we’re gonna see many times in the future.

Full house and plaque after the jump. (more…)
