I think we once looked at this one from Logan Circle before but it gets me every time I pass it. Ah, I can’t even look at a picture of it without laughing.

“Dear PoPville,

I am hoping you or your readers might be able to clear up a mystery for me. I was hanging out on a friend’s roofdeck in north Dupont/ Kalorama recently and noticed these odd statues on a neighboring building. They’re a little blurry, but you get the idea. WHAT ARE THEY?! Giant-headed aliens? Gargoyle-devils ready to throw boulders on threatening-looking pedestrians? There’s got to be a story behind them!

I can’t remember the name of the building, but the address is 2120 Connecticut Ave, NW.”

Hmm we once judged this building back in Aug. ’08 but I don’t think we ever solved the mystery about these statues. Anyone know the deal?

Found these on Embassy Row. They were installed in Feb. ’11.

And I couldn’t believe my eyes, but I also spotted two identical ones on the American University campus:

About reCYCLE The Art of Bike Project:
reCYCLE Art of Bike is sponsored by the non-profit Old Takoma Business Association and was designed to celebrate the art, bicycling and recycling cultures of Takoma Park. Artists were commissioned to build seven outdoor sculptures, using mostly bicycle parts, which will be installed along the sidewalks of Old Takoma (Takoma Junction, Maryland, to the Takoma Theatre, DC) to create a self-guided walking tour with the goal of attracting and engaging visitors and showcasing Old Takoma.

I would not have guessed that there was a monument to Guglielmo Marconi.

But it makes sense being right outside Casa Italiana [595 1/2 Third Street, NW]:

At Casa Italiana Language School, we believe learning the Italian language and culture should be fun. With courses designed to engage our students and let them learn effortlessly, Casa Italiana promises to deliver an experience beyond the basic process of learning.

Cool they have cooking classes as well.

Anyone ever stop by Caffe Italia?

Well this is just freaky as hell. Of the dozens of sculptures, this was the only one, outside the Library of Congress, to have an apparent nose bleed. I’m still a little freaked out. Anyone want to take a crack at an explanation (or should I just re-post this later in the week for a caption contest?)
