“Dear PoPville,

I work near Union Station and use to live around the area two years ago, and have noticed the amount of homeless people and drug users around Union Station appears to have dramatically increased. Whenever I walk over to the station, there are groups of people completely passed out or tweaking from drugs. Recently, one person, who was clearly high, was just wandering around in the middle of the street with his eyes closed. Later I saw, the police had to intervene.

Anyway, it makes me feel very unsafe and uneasy about walking over to Union Station. Does anyone know why there has been—what appears to be–an increase in homeless people in the area?”

Ed. Note: In May of 2016 we spoke about “Harassment Outside Union Station” and later that month Korrin L. Bishop, on behalf of Capitol Hill Group Ministry wrote a thoughtful response.

Thanks to all who messaged us via email, twitter and facebook starting around 5pm yesterday:

They ran over a woman’s dog at 14/P. Just kept driving and disobeying traffic laws. What’s up with this legally? Does the city just shrug their shoulders over it? Highly dangerous. I saw two cop cars trailing them but it’s not like that would stop much.”

“Rhode Island Ave NW at North Capitol Street heading towards Logan Circle. There were at least 100 quads and dirt bikes shooting all around traffic, driving on the wrong side of the street and cutting people off, weaving in and out. Most wearing masks.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Have you ever posted anything about mitigating smoke from neighbors? [Ed. Note: Who can forget the classic from April 5, 2011 My Elderly Neighbor Won’t Stop Smoking Pot and our Apartment Reeks] New neighbor moved into the condo next door and I am looking to get someone to come in and make sure all the air ducts and crevices are sealed so the smoke wont keep seeping into my place. Seems like a pretty common city problem but didn’t see anything about companies the PoP community might recommend to do it.”

Has anyone recently worked with a company that deals with issues like this?

“Dear PoPville,

I was crossing the intersection at 17th Street NW and S Street NW, near the S Street Dog Park with a co-worker. A car with about 4 or 5 young white men were at the stop sign, honking at people walking and giving them the middle finger.

My co-worker and I had crossed the street and as they drove through the intersection towards us. They yelled out what I believe to be, “Hey you!” Throwing a full bottle of Vitamin water at us, which, was clearly intended to hit either of us in the head but, it missed. I didn’t catch their license plate number but, it was a Maryland license plate.

So, folks beware, a car with Maryland license plate (think it was a Honda Civic) of about 4 or 5 white men are driving around the city being terrible and assaulting folks. This happened around 5:20pm.”

“I’m exhausted – this has been a hard summer on my block. Between coming home to people passed out and eventually dying to K2 synthetic drugs, being barricaded inside of my house by men threatening me before going to work, men peeing with their pants down at my door step, dodging bullets and daily harassment; nothing prepared me for what I came home to after work today.
