These two pop ups are located pretty close to each other on Ontario Rd in Adams Morgan. Do either of these work? Note the one above has a recess for a little balcony area.

I forget the exact street, I think it’s Florida Ave pretty close to 1st St, NW.
Can anyone explain why they’d put a staircase in front of the window? (There is a house in Shaw that also has a staircase in front of a great bay window).

Overall thumbs up or down on this one? Note that there appears to be solar panels on the back.

Tasteful pop up from 13th and Kenyon St, NW.
“Dear PoP,
A longer-form question/submission for the Ask PoP or the readers who might have experience dealing with the DC bureaucracy:
I am considering adding a pop up to my house near U St. and was wondering 1) what readers experiences have been trying to get permission for that, and 2) how people have dealt with seemingly inconsistent rules enforcement in the city.
The reason the second question is that four of my neighbors have built full pop ups – four complete walls making a completely new floor – while another has only built a half-pop up because, they say, District zoning rules prevented them from doing a full one. They skirted the rules by saying that the half-pop up is actually the maximum sized landing for the stairs, and then they built a deck for the remainder.
Thus, I guess the crux of my question is how come four of the neighbors got to “break” code rules while the others had to follow them? Any advice for how I should approach this project if I wanted to remain legal yet build a full pop up? I would rather not start getting official rulings on things before doing my homework!”
It sounds like you’ll need a variance which we recently spoke about here. Any advice for someone who’s looking to build a pop up?

Thanks to a reader for sending in photos of this pop up from Independence, SE. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

Still a little early for a proper judging but I was surprised to see this new building pop up (literally) on 11th St, NW just south of Florida Ave and next to the relatively new Lacey Building.

The reader writes:
“This might be the best pop-up ever. It used to be 2 stories and has been a rental for the ten years I’ve been on the block. The house was gutted and now has 4 units. The pop-up looks totally natural and blends nicely into the block, which is home to differing styles of houses. Next door, by the way, is a house deserving of a horses ass award. 1342 (the address reads 1324) has been under construction for at least 10 years. It’s ugly but I suppose it could be worse – at least it’s occupied.”

So this is a two parter – thumbs up or down for the pop up above first and second do you think the house to the right deserves a horses ass award nomination?

I’ve been watching this pop up from the 3000 block of Sherman Ave, NW go up for many many months. Looks like it’s finally finished. So…thumbs up or down. Does seem that they got a roof deck too:

I enjoyed watching this property transform. All in all I’d say it came out looking very nice, even with a pop up. Turns out it is another Capcityre property. Looks like the units have already sold or are under contract. Though you can still take a virtual tour here. Now that it’s completed would you say thumbs up or down?

It’s been a while since we’ve taken a look at this pop up on Clifton between 13th and 14th Streets, NW. It’s looks like it’s nearly completed. So what do you think of the pop up and and the back – thumbs up or down?

The pop up at 2212 11th St, NW seems to be progressing nicely.
I think we looked at this a few months ago, but I’m afraid I can’t find those photos.
At this point are you feeling positive or negative about the renovation?
