If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.  I’m aware not everyone loves pets.  But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure.  It’s cool, hold tight, a new post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

Photo by MJ, first ever Red Derby Roof Deck opening 10/22/10

We’ve known for a couple of years that Red Derby (located at 14th and Quincy St, NW) was looking to get a roof deck but excitement began to build in earnest when permits were filed this past June. As some know, I was sick as a dog last week but I started receiving emails Friday night about the Derby’s deck opening and at that moment I fully recovered. Special thanks to MJ for sending some photos and sending the very early word. Also thanks to all the other readers who sent in word about the opening.

As some will note, it is a bit unfortunate that the deck opens just as cold weather is coming however, this weekend was beautiful and when I checked it out on Sat. I also spotted some heaters. So unless we get a crazy winter like last year, I’d say it’ll be open for a while. And of course next Spring is absolutely going to kick ass.

One of the best bars (if not the best bar) in DC just got way better. Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

The flier says:

“Drop dead gorgeous renovation w/ all new windows, new furnace & CAC, gourmet kitchen w/ top of the line Energy Star appliances, ceramic bathrooms which will make your jaw drop, and beautiful new hardwood floors, decorator paint colors throughout, custom large deck on rear and 1 car garage w/ automatic opener. Extra loft/den area would make great office/playroom or exercise area!”

You can find more info here and photos here.

So people ask me how do I pick homes for GDoN and rental options. GDoN posts are homes that I usually pass during my walks. Exceptions are houses that are emailed to me by folks. Rental options I usually find via craigslist but sometimes requests are emailed to me as well. These are normally indicated by “reader request, owner request” etc. So don’t hesitate to email me with interesting homes/rentals you come across.

Anyway, I saw this house last weekend and thought it would still be for sale when I planned on posting it today. I was (happily) surprised to see that it was already under contract. I’ll admit, I didn’t think it was going to go for this asking price. But I do think think the renovation looks good. And since you guys are better at searching the archives of this site than I am, didn’t another renovated house on this block go for a similar price? What do you guys think of the reno? Are you surprised that the asking price of this 4 bed/3.5 bath was $575,000?

Photo of ‘deviled eggs at 2amys’ by PoPville flickr user laurarotondo

“Dear PoP,

I have been meaning to write you for a couple of weeks about Tom the Egg Guy, who is at the Petworth Farmer’s Market. I have been getting my eggs from him, as well as many of our neighbors, since the market started. I love his eggs and attempt to let everyone about how delicious they are. Apparently he also goes to the DuPont Farmer’s Market as well. Now, with our Farmer’s Market ending in a couple of weeks, I have been worried about how I am going to survive the winter without them. I asked Tom if he sold his eggs anywhere in town and he said no, but that he was considering talking to YES! Organic Market about maybe carrying his eggs. I told Tom I would request that at the store as well. I am going to ask Tom this week if he has talked to anyone at the store yet, but in the mean time, if you can help me reach out to more of the Petworth population, to please ask YES! to carry his eggs the next time they are in the store, the more requests they get the more they will consider the suggestion (at least this is what Gary Cha-owner has said that part of his business philosophy is to be responsive to his customers). Please help me be able to get the best eggs I have ever tasted year round. I doubt I am the only person who would be willing to purchase a dozen a week. The store has a suggestion book, I wrote up my request in there.”

I also happen to be a fan of Tom so I think this would be great. I never thought I could tell the difference between eggs but his really are awesome. In addition to the instore suggestion book, you can contact YES! Organic Market on-line here. Any other fans of Tom?

Thanks to all who sent in word. Sorry for the delay in posting. (Ed. Note: I’m fighting some sort of brutal cold/flu and I’m pretty wrecked right now. So I apologize in advance if there are some delayed postings today/tomorrow).

MPD reports:

“Units received a call for sounds of gunshots just before 1am and located an unconscious black male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Members of the Homicide Branch are on the scene handling the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-888-919-CRIM(E).”

“The male victim has been pronounced. His identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.”

and from Council Member Bowser:

“Neighbors- I was briefed during the night of a fatal shooting on Georgia Avenue, between Georgia and Varnum Streets. The victim is a young black male. It appears to have happened in front of an apartment building on the east side of Georgia. I understand that the assailant walked up to the victim and shot. MPD has not released any lookout information as yet. MPD investigated during the night and at daybreak for evidence.

This is the third outbreak of violence in this short three blocks in several weeks. Since our larger crime meeting, I’ve conducted a smaller group one to focus on this sub area. MPD and other agencies are is investigating and working many angles to break up this fight.”

Construction started in earnest back in April and they’ve opened their doors (a couple store fronts south of Looking Glass Lounge) last week. I know not everyone is a huge fan but score one for another vacant storefront being filled. It may not be my choice every night but I’m happy for the option. And they deliver, you can order online here.

This rental is located at 3634 Georgia Ave NW (above Looking Glass Lounge):

The Craigslist ad says:

“Large, bright 2Br/1Ba in Col. Heights, with Open floor plan, granite/stainless kitchen, hardwood floors, washer/dryer just 1 block from Metro. Pets Allowed case-by-case.”

Wild. I wonder if this is the former yoga studio space? Anyway does $2200 sound reasonable for this 2 bed/1 bath?
