Example of one of the many beautiful sculptures in Rock Creek Church Cemetery

Back in Nov. ’10 we took a week to look at some of the beautiful sculptures at Rock Creek Church Cemetery located at Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW and near the Old Soldiers Home grounds.

The following circulated on the MPD 4D Listserv last night:

Dear Neighbors,

It is a great sadness to share with you that our cemetery has been targeted for theft of bronze. At the end of last week an 11 ft bronze work of art and other pieces were removed. This took quite an effort since the installation required a crane and at least six men to get it in place. You can imagine how the family of the deceased feels.

We believe that we offer the community a beautiful, quiet spot for walking, running and playing with children. However, we need you to help us. The security mantra of “if you see something say something is a good one.” If you are enjoying our space and see persons defacing the property or acting in a suspicious way please notify our office (202) 726-2080.

The Police Department are doing their part. Please help us so we can continue to allow public use of this space.

Common Good City Farm, on V St NW between 2nd & 4th Streets

Fourth-generation Texas farmer Eric Herm deals with the harsh economic realities and complicated legislation facing farmers, as well as the undeniable health impact of GMO crops and excessive chemicals on all living creatures in his new book, Son of a Farmer, Child of the Earth: A Path to Agriculture’s Higher Consciousness. Eric will speak about the critical need for more American farmers, wider use of sustainable agriculture techniques, and more resilient local communities.

Copies of the book will be available on the farm and at a book signing at Sisterspace and Books, 3717 Georgia Avenue NW, beside the Georgia Avenue/Petworth Metro east entrance from 6pm.

$979 sound reasonable for this 1 bedroom?

This is from a block south of the Petworth metro at 3653 Georgia Ave, NW. It used to be the Hair Plus & Gift Shop.

I was hoping that there would be a better indication of what might be coming soon but I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned…

Any guesses?

“Dear PoP,

Last week I told you about “Klassy Kakes” moving into 705 Kennedy and you got some good feedback. I haven’t notice any movement yet but next door a New business will be moving in at 703 Kennedy.
I had a chance to speak with the owners of the new business and found out that It Will be a flower shop ,”‘L’Enfant Flowers” they used to be at the L’Enfant Plaza and are now relocating to Kennedy . They also said they would be open next week sometime just in time for Mother’s Day and Easter.”

“Dear PoP,

I am the original poster who had the negative experience when the Blue Banana first opened. A lot of the commentors thought I didn’t give them a fair chance. I was hopeful that the owners would read my post and fix the issues. I’d like to do my part to promote them now if I can. I hope you post this or let them know they have a happy customer. My original complaints were:

1.) They didn’t have Direct TV as advertised – now they do
2.) There was no place to hang up my purse and jacket under the bar – now there are plenty of hooks
3.) The bathroom was gross with pubes and poop – this time it was VERY clean (even at midnight!)

The band (Bandylions) were really good. The place was packed and it looked like everyone was having a great time. The guy bartender gave me a fun dog fish coaster puzzle and my husband thought the girl bartender was hot. They were both really nice and efficient. The beer selection was great and the prices were reasonable. There was lots of Duke fans earlier in the night before the music started. (Nice win UNC.) I am looking forward to watching future March Madness games there in the very near future. If the owners are reading now, thanks for the great addition to the neighborhood. Cheers!”

Blue Banana, recently opened in Dec. ’10, is the sports bar located at 3632 Georgia Ave, NW next to Looking Glass Lounge south of the Petworth metro. When they first opened I received a number of negative emails and after posting one some neighbors went batshit crazy strongly disagreed. At the time I wrote:

“Personally, I think it’s a bit too early to tell but hopefully they make some adjustments after reading some constructive criticism. ”

I’m happy to hear that the original letter writer is now a fan. That section of Georgia Ave is ripe for (and has already seen some) more positive development. Have you had the chance to visit or revisit the Blue Banana? How were your experiences?

It’s great to round out sports bar week with a positive review.

Believe me, it gives me no pleasure to ask this question. Back in Oct. ’10 we learned that The Hitching Post was for sale at 200 Upshur St, NW across from the Old Soldiers Home. The Hitching Post is of course an iconic little restaurant/bar that has been open since 1967. And despite the fact that there are many many fans, it is completely understandable that the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Carter would like to enjoy a retirement after almost 45 years of proprietorship. While some thought the Hitching Post had abandoned their plans when they renewed their liquor license, I’m sad to say plans have changed a little but only from the space being for sale to the space now being for lease.

I’ve been in touch with the Carter’s daughter who tells me that they are looking for rent of about $2500-$3000 per month. What do you think is a fair lease price? But her other question is even more intriguing – what would you guys like to see in the Hitching Post’s space? A bakery/cupcake spot? A different themed restaurant/bar? A deli? A wine bar? Keep it exactly the way it is?

Do you think it would be possible to retain the Hitching Post’s charm under different management/ownership?
