Believe me, it gives me no pleasure to ask this question. Back in Oct. ’10 we learned that The Hitching Post was for sale at 200 Upshur St, NW across from the Old Soldiers Home. The Hitching Post is of course an iconic little restaurant/bar that has been open since 1967. And despite the fact that there are many many fans, it is completely understandable that the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Carter would like to enjoy a retirement after almost 45 years of proprietorship. While some thought the Hitching Post had abandoned their plans when they renewed their liquor license, I’m sad to say plans have changed a little but only from the space being for sale to the space now being for lease.

I’ve been in touch with the Carter’s daughter who tells me that they are looking for rent of about $2500-$3000 per month. What do you think is a fair lease price? But her other question is even more intriguing – what would you guys like to see in the Hitching Post’s space? A bakery/cupcake spot? A different themed restaurant/bar? A deli? A wine bar? Keep it exactly the way it is?

Do you think it would be possible to retain the Hitching Post’s charm under different management/ownership?

Yesterday when I was on my way to work I spotted this new sign located at 705 Kennedy Street N.W.
I says that a new business is opening call KLASSY KAKES . That would be great for the neighborhood , now
all we need is a Starbucks and that would really be great.”

Nice! Think cupcakes/cakes/kakes will do well here? Since the reader brought it up – think a Starbucks would do well here?

And, hell, I’m gonna go on a bit of tangent – why aren’t there more Dunkin’ Donuts around DC?


“Dear PoP,

while walking by Sweet Mango Cafe last night I noticed a sign on the door saying they would be re-opening this weekend and it looked like there were a few people making the final touches. I, for one, will be celebrating with some oxtail this weekend.”

Sweet Mango Cafe, located at the intersection of Georgia and New Hampshire Ave, NW (across from the metro on N.H.) has been closed since a a fire that took place on Dec. 4 ’10.


On Wed. afternoon I had the great honor of being invited to check out the newly renovated Petworth library, located at the intersection of Kansas, Upshur and Georgia Ave, NW (technically 4200 Kansas Ave, NW), which will re-open this Monday, Feb. 28. I was once again able to meet with Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper who we last met with back in mid-Jan. to tour the new Tenley-Friendship library.

The Petworth renovation is closest to the Georgetown renovation in that they were historic buildings that kept their good bones and were improved upon rather than brand new buildings like Shaw and Tenleytown. As a result there isn’t the same jaw dropping reaction when you see it but the improvements are equally impressive.

Their Web site says:

The library will re-open on Monday, February 28, 2011. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10:30 am.

The library will host a Grand Opening Party on Saturday, March 12 from 10 am to 4 pm.

The library will feature:

· Welcoming spaces with comfortable seating and lounge chairs
· More than 40,000 books, DVDs and other library materials with a capacity to hold up to 80,000
· Children’s Story Room for storytelling and other children’s activities
· Dedicated areas for adults, children and teens
· 40 computers with free Wi-Fi Internet access
· Laptops for personal use or computer training classes
· 100-person community room connecting to a new outdoor patio
· 12-person conference room
· Two quiet study rooms
· New and restored woodwork throughout
· Parking lot
· Landscape and site improvements
· New cupola and balustrade constructed according to the original 1938 design

When asked what the most striking features of the new library were, Chief Librarian Cooper didn’t hesitate in her response:

First – the area is now flooded with light;
Second – the map on the floor upon entering is truly striking (photo after the jump);
Third – the basement community room which used to be a garage storage space was expanded and can now sit over 100 people;
Fourth – though the cupola was in the original architectural plans it was not built until now.

The other incredible improvement is simply the amount of public space. Though the total space had always been around 18,000 square feet before the renovation only 9,500 was public space and today 14,200 square feet is used for public space (an increase of over 42%).

The Petworth library has always been a gem for the community and today it really looks like one. And tomorrow it will no longer be a diamond in the rough.

This past weekend, I was introduced to a few more changes at the Red Derby, located at 3718 14th St, NW (at Quincy). In the backroom the pool table has been removed and Big Buck Hunter and Golden Tee video games have been added along with more lounge like seating. Do you prefer the video games and more seating or the pool table? The dart board remains!

“Dear PoP,

Happy to tell you that an organic-food cafe, Healthy Bites Food has just opened between Ingraham and Jefferson St NW on Georgia Ave. Their primary business is to deliver prepared healthy meals–either vegetarian or with meat–to the homes of their customers. If you go to their website you’ll notice that they offer a wide range of plans. They also have a catering business.

For us in the neighborhood, though, they have a large menu of takeout meals at reasonable prices. They offer breakfast all day. And–decent coffee! Not available anywhere else for blocks and blocks. Had my first delicious meal from them this week, I plan to take all my friends there. No styrofoam.

I asked Bonnie (proprietor) what had brought her to the neighborhood and she said the site had the combination of characteristics they needed. They have a nice loading deck out back, generous preparation space, a basement and a storefront.

Their grand opening is tomorrow, 9-6. They are also involved in a lot of community food programs.”


Back in April ’09 Mother Virginia flowers opened up at the corner of Georgia and Allison St, NW. Turns out that that space was a bit too small. That location will remain open until they complete their move to 3903 Georgia Ave, NW (near Qualia Coffee) at the end of March or beginning of April.

I was eager to learn to what was moving into this newly renovated space.
