“Dear PoPville,

My neighbors in the apartment next to mine (we share a wall) recently got a new dog. The problem is that whenever the owners aren’t home, he barks incessantly (howls can be heard across the hallway) and the owners seem not to care or are not bothered by it. One of our other neighbors even wrote a note to them recently complaining and politely asking them to do something about it.

I love dogs and completely understand that they can be under stress when in a new home and alone, but this has been going on for multiple months now and is getting out of hand. I shouldn’t be able to hear his howls hours on end from my living room. What is the proper thing to do… get my apartment management involved? Talk to the neighbors again? I don’t want them to remove the dog but there has to be a proper way to handle this.

“Did you know that more pets get lost on July 4th than any other day of the year?  Fireworks can be terrifying for our pets, so please do your best to help protect your pets this holiday.  The below tips are taken from the American Veterinary Medicine Association’s website, at www.avma.org

  • Make sure your pets – cats and dogs alike – have identification tags with up-to-date information.
  • If your pets aren’t already microchipped, talk with your veterinarian about microchipping. This simple procedure can greatly improve your chances of getting your pets back if they become lost.
  • If your pets are microchipped, make sure your contact information in the microchip registry is up-to-date.
  • Take a current photo of all of your [pets] – just in case.
  • Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades and other gatherings. Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there’s great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away.
  • Consider putting your pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate during parties and fireworks.

“Dear PoPville,

Our dog will be 15 yrs young in August. For the past 8 months he’s been battling an eye disease in both eyes. His left eye healed and his right eye did not, which resulted in it removal. It’s been 3 wks since his procedure and he’s back to his normal lively ways (yay!!). During all of this we’ve been unable to properly groom him. We need a groomer who will take great caution when trimming around his face because his remaining eye is still susceptible to injury. Does the PoPville community have any recommendations for senior dog groomers or dog groomers that make house calls?”

Amazing. Thanks to a reader for sending on Saturday:

“Witnessed a girl riding a scooter in Shaw with a cat in what appears to be a purpose-built backpack.

Unclear how the cat feels about this.”

This takes me back to July 13th 2017, which was also awesome: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This is Pavi of Stanton Park. She’s an outdoor cat we fed once seven years ago and, well, you can figure it out from there. The last two summers she’s developed a reaction to something that affects her nose, face and ears. It’s nothing in our flower garden nor mosquitos. It started appearing before the flowers or bugs. We brought a vet to the house but they couldn’t identify the cause. If anyone has thoughts on treatments please let us know. (We would bring her in the house but my wife is terribly allergic. We built her a nice, insulated house for the cold months so otherwise she’s fine.)”

Brianne K. Nadeau tweets this morning:

“Great news on the Columbia Heights dog park. I got this letter from @wmata yesterday evening. Thanks to our efforts, they decided to pull it off the market and will negotiate with the District to purchase the property. @11thandBark #SaveTheDogPark”

From the letter:

“That process requires WMATA to sell property for ‘fair market value’, which is equal to $2,150,000 for the 1100 Park Road, NW property.”

“Hi name is Cal, he’s a 2 year old Black and Tan hound/cur mix. He’s really sweet but is scared and may be hard to catch. A little food would do the trick! He’s my whole family hear and can’t imagine life without him. Any help putting the word out would be greatly appreciated. Call 512-788-4538” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My partner and I are planning to adopt a dog from a local shelter/rescue agency in a few months. We’re hoping the PoPville (or AdoPtville) community might be able to provide some advice on the best ways to prepare. We both had dogs growing up and dog-sit regularly for friends and family, but this will be our first pet dog as adults.

There are some obvious supplies we’ll need to pick up, but are there good guides on other ways to prepare available? Recommended vets, dog-walkers, pet insurance, etc.?

Any direction, including past posts with similar conversation threads, would be greatly appreciated!”

“Dear PoPville,

Last week, during a 30 min, 3 mile run with my dog, a man passing us from behind us kicked his leg out in a deliberate attempt to kick my dog when he thought I wasn’t looking in his direction and then gave a weird/creepy smile when he realized I was looking. (Where Florida and Sherman Ave merge)

Then about 10 min later on 14th Street, a young woman squatted down in front my my dog while we were waiting at a cross walk and then began jumping/lunging toward her and making noise in blatant attempt to scare her. (She’s obviously lucky that my dog didn’t bite her because that’s a recipe for a dog bite!)

I have taken my dog on countless walks/runs in these areas and never experienced this before. Anyone else experiencing this?!”
