What to do with a cat that consistently pees all over house? At wits end!
“We have an 11 year old cat that for the past 2+ years has been consistently peeing all over the house. We have tried everything we can think of to stop it. He has been checked out by two vets and there doesn’t appear to be any underlying medical condition. We’ve tried all the tips and tricks the vet and internet blogs have suggested. We keep a clean litter box in a private place, we’ve used heavy duty cat urine removers to try and remove the smell and applied special sprays that are supposed to stop a cat from peeing. We give him lots of attention. But nothing is helping. I am sick of cleaning up after it and having my house destroyed not to mention the sanitation concerns considering we have 2 small children. But, what can we do? Take him to a shelter? Who wants an 11 year old cat who pees everywhere? Taking him there is basically akin to getting him put to sleep and it makes me sick to my stomach to think about it.
By all other counts he is a great cat and maybe if he was in a home without the stress of young kids he wouldn’t do it anymore. We’ve tried for months to locate a new home or situation for him with no luck. The final straw was this weekend when we paid a professional service to come and clean all of the carpets and furniture in our house in advance of house guests and he proceeded to pee all over the carpet moments after they left. Has anyone been in this situation before and what did you do? We are at our wits end.”

“Dear PoPville,
I saw these notes up in Logan Circle today, making me think that Ben, a sweet old pup iconic to many in the Logan community, had passed on to a better place. We used to see Ben and his dad out often, and his dad gave us some sage advice over the past year on how to train our new puppy to be more like Ben – sweet, patient, lovable, and obedient. I know we will miss seeing Ben walking around the neighborhood and wanted to mark the passing of this old friend.”

“I saw this Craigslist ad, about a healthy 3-year-old cat whose human says he’ll have the cat euthanized if the cat isn’t adopted soon, due to a seemingly unaddressed behavioral issue. Washington Humane Society tells me that humane euthanization, unfortunate though it would be, wouldn’t be illegal in this situation. Perhaps you could share?”

I have a beautiful 3 year old Russian Blue mix named Gary that’s in need of a new home. He’s a wonderfully playful cat that is quiet and always uses his litter box like a gentleman. We’ve had him since he was a kitten and he was truly treated like a baby by my wife and I. Unfortunately Gary hasn’t taken well to our real baby and he has begun spraying around the house. We’ve been keeping him locked away for the last 6 months, and he doesn’t spray when locked up, but whenever we let him out he feels the need to mark his territory.I can’t keep him locked away forever, and he’s making life difficult for our other cat too because they’re frequently locked away together. So I’ll be posting this ad nightly for the next 7-10 days before I have Gary put to sleep. No adoption fee, and if anyone is willing to shelter him I’ll pay for his food for the first 6 months. I’ll also consider trading him for another cat.

Thank you to everyone that sent suggestions. While not everyone agrees with my plan of action, I believe everyone’s comments come from a place of compassion for Gary.I don’t know how I did it, but what I failed to mention in my post is that Gary is an aggressive cat. If Gary met 10 people, he’d mildly stalk and swipe at 5 of them, ignore 3 of them, quasi enjoy one of them, and aggressively peruse and attack one of them. I decided a long time ago that I could manage his aggression, but I can’t deal with his spraying, which is probably why I over looked it. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
My roommates and I found a bright yellow/green parakeet at 16th and Oak St NW (Mt. Pleasant/Col. Heights). It appeared to be in good health, no injuries. We managed to get it into a bag and took it to the Washington Humane Society at 1201 New York Ave. NE. It’s hanging out there for now, awaiting its owner. Would you be able to post something to try to alert the owner? Much appreciated! I’ve attached a photo (post-rescue).”
Hope it’s not this guy again!

“I found this sweet kitty on my porch this morning. She (I think) has a lion cut and is clearly someone’s pet and not a stray. She was very hungry and wants attention. Sadly, I had to go to work so she is in our bathroom. I plan on taking her to Atlas Vet to be scanned later today.
In the meantime, does anyone recognize this kitty? I’d love for her to find her caretakers. I’ve also sent this to the Humane Society.”

“Dear PoPville,
I want to alert others in the area to a horrific experience my husband and I had with our dog’s groomer, who I know has many clients around Eckington and Bloomingdale. I hope that by sharing this experience, I can prevent other dog parents from going through a similar trauma.
We picked up our little guy from his grooming appointment last weekend, only to find that the white part of his left eye was completely blood red. The groomer claimed that nothing out of the ordinary had happened, even though our dog had clearly been injured. The groomer downplayed it and acted like there was no reason for us to be alarmed. As soon as we got home, we noticed that our dog was having trouble seeing. He was running into furniture, etc. Even more disturbing was that he was behaving as though he was shell shocked. He was pacing nonstop and cowering in corners. He was clearly terrified.
We brought him to the emergency vet at Friendship Animal Hospital, where the veterinarian discovered deep purple bruising beneath his fur, all the way around the exterior of his eye, in addition to a cut on the inside of his eye. She determined that his injury was likely the result of some kind of blunt force trauma, whether an accident or intentional.
My husband and I are absolutely sick over this. We love our dog more than anything, so to think that we put him in harm’s way is incredibly distressing. He’s been to three vet appointments due to this injury, and we are so thankful that he seems to be making a full recovery and has regained his normal sight. If anyone would like the full details, I am eager to share them, and would also be happy to share the report from the vet. You can contact me directly at mmkashino(at)gmail.com.”

“My dog, Charlotte, slipped her leash with the dog sitter last night. She was last seen at 10th ne btwn c and d. A dog tracker was brought out and had her scents at our door last night and today at 9th and a Ne.
Any help to get the word out would be appreciated. she’s apparently sticking close to home.
If people could contact me (Lauren Wright) at 202-430-1552 or laurenbalog(at)gmail.com that would be great. she’s about 40 pounds, 3 years old and shy but not aggressive. “
