Since this photo was taken, a polished concrete countertop now adorns the half wall you see.
Earlier in the week I mentioned that Beau Thai a new restaurant will be opening up at the corner of R and New Jersey Ave, NW. At first we thought takeout would open Monday, then Thursday, now I’m hearing on twitter and elsewhere that it is now looking like a Friday opening. But I was able to get my hands on a menu which you can see in a pdf below:
If you can’t open the PDF and have a magnifying glass:
And here’s a bit more info from a Shaw resident working with the new restaurant:
“Beau Thai will initially operate as a fast food establishment due to zoning restrictions. Earlier this year, we submitted an application for a special exception to change the existing nonconforming use (fast food) into another nonconforming use (restaurant). Last month, ANC2C voted unanimously in favor of supporting our application, as did the Convention Center Community Association. We have a hearing before the Board of Zoning Adjustment on September 21, 2010 about our application. If all continues to go well, Beau Thai will be able to operate as a sit down restaurant soon thereafter.
I have sampled many of the items on the menu; the food is FANTASTIC! It’s so fresh, tasty, and authentic. Additionally, the space is really beautiful, with exposed brick walls, crystal pendant lights, dark hardwood floors, etc. As a Shaw resident myself, I can say Beau Thai will be a true asset for the neighborhood and I’m very excited about its opening!”

Back in March we heard about a new restaurant, Beau Thai, coming to the corner of R & New Jersey Ave, NW. I’ve had some timely emails on the topic. A reader wrote last week:
“Hey! So my boyfriend and I bike down R street every day to work, and we’ve been monitoring the progress of Beau Thai (at R & New Jersey) pretty closely. Today there were two guys out front and my boyfriend asked them when the restaurant would be opening…they said probably next week! So Bloomingdale might be getting TWO restaurants in August if Rustic keeps on track!”
and from a Bloomingdale resident (email):
“Please note in the upcoming news that Beau Thai will open on this Monday, August 9, for take-out; dine-in coming soon! The restaurant is located at R & New Jersey Ave NW.”
I stopped by on Sunday, and though the doors were locked, I peeked through the window and the inside was looking great. If anyone tries some take out, let us know what you think. I’ll be sure to update when the dine-in option is available.
UPDATE: I’m now told Beau Thai is aiming to open on Thurs. I’ll repost when date is set in stone.

This building is being built on the lot located at the corner of 15th and Swann St, NW. If the new building matches the rendering I’ll be seriously impressed. You guys think it’s possible?

The Mid City Web site says:
“The 11th Annual Dog Days of August!
DC’s Coolest Downtown Neighborhood Hosts the Hottest End-of-Summer Weekend!
Come hang out and enjoy special events, sales, restaurant deals, and family fun throughout MidCity!”
You can download a flyer including a map of participants below:

This one is located right across from Old City Green on N St, NW. It’s wild because from the front it looks like a regular row house but from the side you can see it’s huge. I’m guessing condos will be coming, anyone know for sure?

We’ve judged the modern building on the right before (which pretty much gets a love/hate reaction from readers and is often referenced when judging new buildings in the neighborhood) but I wanted to point out that the small home right next door is getting totally renovated. The outside used to be white vinyl and is now red brick. You like the look?

“Dear PoP,
Bread for the City Expansion/addition on 7th Street NW by Wiebenson and Dorman Architects. What do you think? What do the readers think? This picture was taken last week.”
Here’s what it looked like back in March.
I think it looks awesome! Big thumbs up. What do you guys think?

Great new video on the Kelly Towles mural at 12th and W St, NW, Scout.

Still a little early for a proper judging but I was surprised to see this new building pop up (literally) on 11th St, NW just south of Florida Ave and next to the relatively new Lacey Building.
