I always stop to admire this building. But when I did a quick search to see if we’ve looked at any other condos here – I saw that we judged this one back in Feb. ’11. At the time the asking price was $867,500. Today unit #1 is going for $725,000 ($334 monthly condo fee) – sound more realistic?

There was a little confusion yesterday as to what happened in the alley next to Shaw’s Tavern. MPD shares more info today:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a hit and run, resulting in a fatality, which occurred in the 1800 block of 6th Street, NW.

On Sunday, October 23, 2011, at approximately 8:00 am officers from the Third District responded to the 1800 block of 6th Street, NW to investigate the report of a man down. Upon arrival on the scene, they discovered an unidentified adult male lying on the ground unconscious. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and determined that the victim showed no signs consistent with life.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the apparent nature of the injuries sustained indicate that the unidentified man was stuck and dragged by a vehicle, which fled the scene.

The decedent has been identified as 32-year-old John Young Kim of Berkeley, CA

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746).”

“Dear PoPville,

I was biking up 9th St, NW, this Sunday evening, just past the convention center, at about 10:10 or 10:15 PM, and as I passed the intersection with O St. I heard about 5-8 pops from shots being fired, with several rounds whizzing over my head. I could particularly hear the bullets hitting the leaves in the trees. Obviously, I did not stop; however, in the seconds when I first heard the shooting, I looked over and I saw a large dark SUV at the corner of 7th and O, although it may well have been parked there. Anyway, I biked on, ducked around the corner, and called 911, by which time police sirens were already wailing in my direction. It took a while to get through, so I’m assuming they must have been loaded with calls. The 911 dispatcher, after getting that I was fine, and hadn’t really seen anything much, hung up pretty quickly. I reckon this was the appropriate way to handle the situation so that he could talk to anyone who might really need help. I then stopped by the Third District offices to let them know what I’d seen. So, that’s my DC shooting story for the week.

I’d just like to say, props to the officers who drive fast towards people shooting guns with real bullets in them, they really do that, and also for the professional way the officer at the Third District took my statement. I’d say my admiration for the people who head towards danger has increased quite a bit as of this evening, and I am ever more grateful for the work they do. I just wish that it were not necessary.”

From MPD:

“MPD units are investigating a shooting that occurred possibly around 7th and O street or 1400 block of 6th st around 10:20 pm. An adult male appears to have been shot 1x in the leg.. Anyone with information relating to this event is asked to call 202-727-9099”

The Craigslist ad says:

“This is a great find….2 bedroom/2 bath top floor flat…only 3 units in the building. 2 blocks to the metro in the cool LeDroit Park area. Flat features central air; jet bathtubs in both baths; granite counter tops; modern appliances; washer/dryer in the unit; and a great open living space floor plan. Will be available November 1 for move-in. If you would like to come to the open house please contact me for exact location.”

$2050 for this 2 bed/2 bath sound right?

Toucan Boutique opened up back in March ’10 at 1911 9th St, NW (just south of U St.) in the former Lettie Gooch space (now located at 1517 U Street, NW). I was sad to see for lease signs in the window yesterday. I spoke to the owner who said the space will still be open for a few more weeks and they’ll continue to do trunk shows. Down the road it is possible they may open another brick and mortar store. I think this is a big loss for 9th St, NW.

“Dear PoP,

I have been meaning to email you for a while about the property on the corner of 9th and RI Ave, NW. It has been boarded up forever (a Horse’s Ass award I think?) and recently has had construction people gutting the building. Any word on what this is?”

It’s great to see work begin on the old Slum Historique building. Back in Nov. ’10 Renew Shaw noted:

“The once-muraled, long bemoaned, prominently situated properties at Ninth, Q and Rhode Island Avenue changed hands this week. The new ownership has a track record of bringing historic structures back to life”

Updates as construction progresses.

According to a recent liquor license application It’s Called INCEPTION is applying for a Tavern license and will be:

“New Tavern. Tavern/Pub style menu. Live entertainment including DJ and occasional live music and dancing. Occupancy load is 399. Summer Garden 100 seats and Sidewalk Café 35 seats.”

I believe 645 Florida Ave, NW used to be a wig store. It will be interesting to see who opens first, Inception or the nearby Shaw’s Tavern located at 520 Florida Ave, NW. I’m guessing a significant build out will be required for this new tavern. Who do you think will open first? Stay tuned.
