A reader yesterday noted that the trees were planted but I still hadn’t posted about it. I swear I wasn’t being lazy, I just have to space my posts out between Monday and Friday. I’m super psyched. It’s going to look great when the trees mature a bit and get leaves in the warmer weather.

The New York Times just published an article called Chefs Settle Down in ‘the Real D.C.’. They focus on Petworth, Columbia Heights, U Street and H Street, NE. They say:

“In Petworth, Columbia Heights, the U Street district and even the dicier parts of North Capital Hill, a little restaurant revival is under way. Washington neighborhoods that for years were considered too dangerous or too poor for a viable sit-down restaurant are suddenly entertaining quite a few.”

You can read the full article here.

Well, it’s been a month since the last update and it seems to be coming along very nicely. I was most struck but the silver things up top. Do you think these are just for style or function or both? Do you like they way they look?

Towards the back of the building you can see there has been some progress on the tower type structures that are getting a white trim.

So you digging the look? I haven’t heard anymore updates on whether or not it will be rental or condo nor have I heard more retail news besides Gillian Clark’s new restaurant. I’ll keep you updated as news develops but if you guys hear anything be sure to let me know!

Over the weekend the Post wrote an article titled: Petworth Pizzeria Fills a Void Tastefully. I went to grab a pie this weekend and congratulate Jose on the nice article when he told me about his window getting smashed. He seemed to have good spirits (even showing me the above photo that his friend took of him). But still this is so frustrating. Someone finally opens up a great spot on Georgia Avenue and has to deal with this bull shit. Cause it was pure vandalism not even a burglary (thankfully). It just really pisses me off that here the guy gets some good news and that very evening his window gets smashed. It’s not fair. Life’s not fair I guess. Well, it’s gonna cost a lot of money to replace so if anyone is hankering for pizza this week make the effort to support Moronis located at 4811 Georgia Ave. And of course the pizza is phenomenal so everyone wins!

“I’m new to Petworth, enjoying the neighborhood for the most part, nice renovated house, close to metro, liking Domku and Looking Glass, need to check out some more stuff.

Last night (Friday), however, I witnessed an unfortunate sight right outside of Petworth Metro. After a drink at Looking Glass I was walking a friend to metro when we saw a man wearing a black balaclava without any openings for eyes or mouth, he was beating up another man, who had fallen to the ground and was being kicked in the head. The victim eventually got up and ran off. What was troubling was it seemed like the assailants friends were watching and laughing during the ordeal and taking cell phone pictures. The assailant threatened us, so we scattered and walking away I turned to see him kicking another man on the ground in the street.

The whole thing seemed like an activity for this group of people, their friend wearing a mask would pick fights with people that walked by and his friends would take cell phone pictures.

My question is is this anything you have heard of? Is this something that happens in Petworth? I seem to recall a trend like this in the UK a while back, where kids would just randomly assail people and capture it on cell phone video.

Any insight would be great. I called the police as I walked home. an unfortunate end to an otherwise great night out in Petworth.”

Good lord, I thankfully have never seen nor heard of anything like this before in Petworth or anywhere else in DC. This is some very sick behavior. Regular robberies are bad enough but to do it just for the thrill of it – is beyond disturbing. I hope you gave the police as proper a description as possible, particularly of the friends taking pictures as that could probably help with an investigation/conviction.

Has anyone else seen or heard of anything like this happening before?

The flier says:

“Spacious semi-detached home with basement rental ($1050/month) just 2 blocks from Petworth Metro & the close to Columbia heights Shopping District. Two car garage, nice backyard, next to recent new development! Grab your agent and go take a look!”

You can find more info but oddly only two photos here.

Well, the one interior photo does look nice… The asking price is $639,999. But I noticed that the 2008 DC tax assessment is only $513,070. Is it common for the DC tax assessments to be much lower than the asking price?

A long time ago I posted this sculpture located on Georgia Ave just north of Upshur but there was no plaque at the time. I finally spotted the (new?) plaque. Sadly it has already been defaced but I’m super glad to know a little bit more about this amazing sculpture.

It kinda looks a bit surreal, right? So what do you think of the building? This is the spot where the YES! Organic Market will go into. Not sure on the exact date of their opening though. I seem to recall folks took issue with the “tower” on previous buildings I’ve shown. Overall do you dig the look of the building?
