Solar Party and Solar Tour

Date: Friday August 5th
Location: 4700 14th Street, NW
Time: 5:00-9:00 PM

Dear Solar Supporters. Summer is here and the sun is shining. We have fought many battles this year and won a few big ones! It is time to celebrate, mix, mingle, take stock, brainstorm and talk about what should we do next to make DC the most solar city on the planet! You are invited to a BBQ / social. The party is being hosted at 4700 14th street by Solar Solution, an installer located in the heart of Petworth! Come meet other solaristas! This is an open party for the entire solar community– members of DC Sun, members of the DC Government, Council Members, Solar Installers, local and national environmental leaders, policy and industry folks not to mention curious and interested residents! Please invite your friends and neighbors to join you so that we can make DC a green community.

We want to especially encourage Petworth and other Ward 4 residents to come out and join the fun– as we push to strengthen the Petworth Solar Coop. For more info about the Petworth Solar Coop contact Maria Wilson mailto:[email protected]

TOUR: We will have a small solar tour of Petworth based solar installations– before the party. If you are interested in participating in the solar tour RSVP [email protected] There are several residential installations and a few commercial installations that we will be able to show that are within walking distance.

FOOD and DRINK: We will be cooking hot dogs, hamburgers. Please bring a side dish, salad, dessert or something for the grill. Join the solar fun!

$599,000 sound right for this 4 bed/3.5 bath?

Ed. Note: A 4 bed/3.5 bath just went under contract a block away at 723 Taylor St, NW (asking $599,000)

Back in early July King & I Pizza opened up at 847 Upshur St, NW. I’m happy to see that they’ve fixed up the space nicely with fresh paint and a new awning. I’m also told that the Gyro machine is in!

$5.99 for a gyro with fries sounds pretty good:

I took a walk through Rock Creek Church Cemetery (St. Paul’s Church by Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW and near the Old Soldiers Home grounds) and while I always admire the sculptures, I was taken with some of the “ordinary” headstones. So this’ll be an occasional feature highlighting some of those and other remembrances around town.

“Dear PoP,

Interesting hit and run in the 300 block of Rock Creek Church Road Nw this morning. Witnesses heard a crash and saw the driver of the vehicle trying to leave the scene. The driver was traveling uphill (northeast) along Rock Creek Church Rd, crossed the yellow line, and smashed into vehicles parked on the other side. Once the driver saw he had an audience, he got out of the vehicle and walked away. Described as a Hispanic male wearing blue shorts.

If anyone saw anything or anyone suspicious this am hiding or seemed out of place, please contact MPD.

Parked cars were removed via tow truck.”

“One City Summer Fun … Something for Everyone”
Mayor Gray’s comprehensive summer program with fun activities, events and services for residents of all ages
For more information visit www.onecitysummer.dc.gov or call 311

Ed. Note: And I don’t mean to make light of this very serious situation but seeing the quote “One City Summer Fun … Something for Everyone” underneath this message is probably not good messaging for “One City”.

“Dear PoPville,

I don’t have a dog but I noticed yesterday that EL Haynes has put up a “no dogs” signs on their fence. Currently, the park is used by dogs (and owners!) on evenings and weekends. Is this a temporary thing while they build their addition or will the ban remain in place after the addition is completed?”

The reader is referring to the new EL Haynes school’s Kansas Avenue location at 4501 Kansas Avenue, NW.

I assume the no dogs rule will permanent. It’s been a tough couple of months for Petworth dogs…

Some may recognize this house as one of the first GDoN posts we looked at back in Oct. ’08. At the time the asking price was $519,000 (interesting to note the description is nearly identical from back then) – today asking price for this 3 bed/3 bath is $515,000. Sound right nearly three years later?

From the Petworth Community Market:

Join us tomorrow, July 8, for the Petworth Community Market! The market runs Fridays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., through September 30, along Ninth Street at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street, NW. New this week: Chef demonstration, food truck and a new orchard vendor!

Chef Demo: It’s In the Punch
This week, stop by the market for a chef demonstration by Dan Searing, the bartender at Room 11. On the heels of his recently published book on punch, “The Punch Bowl: 75 Recipes Spanning Four Centuries of Wanton Revelry,” Dan will be making a sangria and a fruit syrup using fresh fruit from the market — most likely raspberries! Stop by for recipe cards.

The Big Cheese Food Truck
After you’ve sampled Dan’s sangria, stop by The Big Cheese Food Truck, which sells delectable sandwiches and soups using cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery. The Big Cheese offers a core menu of six grilled cheese sandwiches plus two weekly specials; a tomato soup + seasonal soup (vegan options); and rustic bread from Lyon Bakery.

Full list of vendors after the jump. (more…)
