4128 Georgia Ave, NW

Lots of folks have been writing in asking about Epiphany BBQ coming to 4128 Georgia Ave, NW (next to the YES! Organic Market.) They were a bit delayed while they were getting their permitting in order but I’m happy to share that they will be opening on Monday. Have a peek at the delicious looking menu here.

200 Upshur St, NW

Back in June we learned that the Hitching Post, located at 200 Upshur St, NW had been sold to the owner of Fusion. I’m happy to report that the renovations have been completed and they are soft opening for cocktails at 5pm tonight. They will be open for dinner tomorrow night (Thurs.)

Finishing touches were ongoing when I stopped by but the new bar pictured above will give you a taste of the renovations.

The former owners, Mr. and Mrs. Carter, will always be a part of the Hitching Post:

And fear not they kept the jukebox:

Dear PoPville,

I can’t tell you how many times I get gas in Maryland or Virginia, just to void the negative experience of getting gas near to my home. It’s amazing how long it’s been this way, especially at the corner of Georgia & Upshur, where the same dingy Shell Gas station has been dilapidated and broken for many years, It’s often embarrassingly unsafe that a large company would lower their expectations of service and presentation so far.

This gas station and many others around it suffer from a lack of cleanliness, dated/filthy service bays, broken gas/air pumps, environmental protection issues, abandoned cars, shoddy paving work, missing supplies like oil and windshield cleaning fluid, inconsistent pricing, and lackluster service and selection in terms of their convenience stores.

DCRA should hold these stations accountable for cleanliness and compliance. The quality is far away from the quality/convenience of suburban stores that charge less for gasoline. I have included a historical photo (above) of the gas station at Georgia & Upshur as well as one from now (below), that shows how this corner has fallen far from grace, even back when there were only dirt roads in the community.

In late July we heard Petworth’s “Stinky Safeway” would likely be closing in September. Yesterday we got confirmation that the official groundbreaking for the project will be on Wed. Sept. 19th!

Photographers get your photos of the store before the property is completely razed. Upload your best ones to the PoPville flickr pool before Sept. 19th and I’ll post the best ones.

It’s finally happening!

4000 Georgia Ave, NW

I know it’s kinda like admitting I enjoy Ruby Tuesday but I also use Red Box. What can I say? I don’t have streaming netflix or cable and sometimes I just wanna watch a movie. I also still pay my bills by mail… I mourned the closure of Blockbuster. So I was pretty psyched to see the 7-11 at Georgia and Shepherd St, NW has a Red Box out front.

The Red Box at the Columbia Heights Giant seems to always be busy. Anyone else use Red Box to rent movies?

847 Upshur St, NW

A reader writes:

There’s a new restaurant coming to the 800 block of Upshur St., NW. It’s going to be called “Good Bites of Petworth.” According to Diego, the owner, it will serve “vegan, vegetarian, and comfort food,” or in other words, food that captures the character of the neighborhood.

We previously heard that the former King and I space at 847 Upshur St, NW would serve “good soul food.” It’ll be interesting to see if they turn out like Georgia Ave’s Everlasting Life or Soul Vegetarian. Updates as construction progresses.
