From an email:

“I wanted to spread the word about the Petworth Dance Project’s summer performance series in Petworth, and their upcoming July 11 show at the Petworth Rec Center. The organizers provide large blankets for attendees to sit on and the performances are free. The past May and June performances were well attended by young and old alike, with little kids dancing on the lawn copying the dancers (pretty cute). It’s a nice way to spend an hour+ on a warm summer evening, and to hang out with and support the Petworth community.”

The 1st Annual Petworth Dance Project, an outdoor festival in the heart of Petworth DC!

The newly formed Petworth Dance Project, which is an extension of the successful Petworth Jazz Project, launches its first Summer series in Washington, DC, with performances on the second Saturdays of the months May through September. The outdoor dance series is free to the public and features an eclectic set of performances on the lawn of the Petworth Recreation Center located at the corner of 8th and Taylor Street NW. The Petworth Dance Project Summer series features eleven DC area dance companies with styles ranging from Modern, West African, Ballet Folklorico, Contemporary, and more. The Project’s goal is to bring the art and joy of Dance to our neighborhood by introducing the community to a wide range of artists, while creating a new space for thriving DC dance companies to perform.

A reader reports:

“Over the weekend, mignot quietly opened. They are a coffeehouse serving coffee from Java House (of DuPont fame), sandwiches, salads, breakfast, milkshakes and some Ethiopian dishes. We stopped by to check it out and it seems like a really nice neighborhood coffee shop.”

Ed. Note: I stopped in as well and the owner was super nice – she tells me that Mignot means My Wish in Amharic (from Ethiopia) and that this restaurant/coffeehouse is her wish. Also breakfast served all day! Stop by and say hi.

“Dear PoPville,

DC has been making a concerted effort to promote biking, but I came across a proposal that negatively affects bikers who live in Columbia Heights and Petworth. Today, Metrobus announced proposed changes to a number of bus lines including the 63 & 64. The basic proposal is to merge the 63 & 64 lines by altering the route of the 63 to run along 11th St between Monroe/Park and Florida. At Florida both lines would then shift back to Sherman and then connect with Vermont. You can see the details here.

Personally, I prefer combining the two lines as it means more frequent bus service on a single street, but as a biker I think Metrobus made the wrong choice in proposing to move both lines to 11th through Columbia Heights. Going down 11th I already have to dodge buses pulling across the dedicated bike lanes on my way to and from downtown. I hate biking on Sherman since it is busier, the lanes seem narrower, and there are not dedicated bike lanes. Plus, for those that ride the bus, Metro’s own studies also show that the 63 has better on time performance in this section than the 64. The distance between Sherman and 11th is very short, so the change would make minimal difference to most bus riders but would very much change the biking experience on this route. Thus, it seems far more logical to move the 64 to Sherman along this stretch. It would increase safety for bikers and improve the on time performance of buses overall – it seems like a win-win. I would encourage fellow bikers and bus riders on one of these routes to contact Metrobus and urge them to move the 64 line to Sherman in this section of Columbia Heights rather than moving the 63 to 11th. I’d be interested to know what PoPville readers think and, if they are interested, to let them know that there is a meeting to discuss the matter today (Thursday) at 5:30 at the MLK Library (901 G St NW).”

“Dear PoPville,

Picture it: the Fourth the July 2015. I woke up, shuffled what’s-his-name out of my room so I could plan brunch with my loved ones, and got excited to celebrate America the way Jesus intended: with mimosas.

We popped on over to our local Safeway, the one by the Georgia Ave metro. We gathered supplies and merrily sauntered back to our apartment to put on some Dolly Parton and make a scrumptious brunch. For America.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a bottle of delicious orange juice with a broken seal. Some hooligan had opened the OJ, removed the protective safety seal, and did God-knows-what with it before putting it back on the shelf.

And this isn’t the first time it has happened! I bought tainted crunchy peanut butter once too. I don’t know why people are tampering with the food at Safeway, but shoppers should be extra careful to make sure the products they’re buying haven’t been opened by some roving pack of miscreants.

This used to be such a great country. I don’t know what happened.

Happy 4th! 🇺🇸👏🏼🇺🇸👏🏼🇺🇸”

Slash Run was hoping to open today in the former El Limeno space, sadly:

“Hey folks, we’re not going to make Monday’s planned opening date, sorry! Final inspections taking a bit longer due to the holiday weekend. Stand by, we’ll announce soon!”

But this is pretty cool:
