“This Siamese (or part Siamese?) cat has been hanging out on my front stoop on Harvard Street NW in Columbia Heights. He came over and let me pick him up today. He seems lost and friendly so I think he may have a home. I have him in my bathroom for now, and will start investigating potential microchipping/home location tomorrow.”

A reader reports:

“Around 9:30 this morning there was an awful hit and run accident on Georgia Ave between Otis & Princeton with a huge EMS response. I spoke to a bystander, who said the victim had been unloading his car (parked in a space facing northbound on Georgia) when a distracted driver moved into the parking lane and hit him, severing the victim’s legs. The driver then reversed and left the scene. He was described as older and a ‘distracted driver.’ Apparently MPD has a license plate, so maybe they will catch the driver soon.

I hope the victim gets the very best healthcare available. Might be a good time to remind everyone: Please remember- PAY ATTENTION when you are driving! Conditions change in an instant and without your full attention things can turn tragic very quickly.”

anxos colony club
3118 Georgia Ave, NW

From a press release:

“What: ANXO, DC’s first cidery and pintxos bar opening in Truxton Circle in early 2016, will follow up its extremely successful ANXO Sighting at Colony Club with a monthly cider club series, continuing through the end of 2015. These will be the fifth, sixth and seventh events in the ANXO Sighting series, and a bar environment gives DC diners and imbibers a preview of what to expect from ANXO’s regular nightly service once it’s open.

The first edition will kick off with an apple pressing demonstration by Beverage Director Tim Prendergast on the Colony Club patio. Guests will learn how to crush, press and ferment apples at home using hobby equipment. Each Cider Club will have a free cider class component beginning just before the main bar event. Those who attend all three classes will come away with free ANXO merch. (more…)

no dogs
Photo by PoPville flickr user ken_1001

“Dear PoPville,

Uno, who was one of the dogs featured on this week’s Afternoon Animal Fix, went to his favorite dog park yesterday to find a sign that said “No dogs allowed” and a giant chain on the gates. A fellow dog owner went by yesterday and saw a representative from DC Parks and Recreation putting up the signs and locks. The representative said that he has received e-mailed complaints from Community Garden users that people are taking their dogs into the fenced-in, so-called, “Rain Garden” which is basically a drainage area for the garden. Though this is the official use, this space has been an unofficial dog park for years and seems to have had the endorsement of the garden. In fact, on the Bruce Monroe Community Garden website, there is a photo that clearly shows that the space was intended for dogs. Additionally, many of the community garden folks also have dogs and use the dog run and many have voiced their support for allowing dogs into the space. It is unclear who has really made the complaints and whether they are actually part of the garden community.

If there are any other dog owners/dog lovers/community members who wish to join our effort to save this dog run, please join our Facebook group.

We are working on writing to our representatives. The dogs and humans who come to the Bruce Monroe Dog Run have formed an awesome community and a safe place for dogs to socialize. We don’t want to lose this park!”

Bench

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a member of the Bruce Monroe Community Garden, located between Sherman and Georgia and Irving and Columbia on the eastern side of Columbia Heights. We had a fantastic bench in the garden, built by a longtime neighborhood resident, that was truly representative of the community (blurb below). The bench was recently stolen and we’re hoping you can help us recover it. Any information or sightings can be sent to [email protected], and we’d just be happy to have it returned intact.

Blurb by the bench’s creator:
Just as the old Bruce School gave up its ghost to be reborn as this park, so too did it give of itself to provide this seat for your weary legs. Using floorboards removed from the original Bruce School gymnasium and a discarded rusty old park bench found in an alley near the school, this new bench was given new life (and a new paint job by neighborhood kids). So as we cultivate the rebirth of our community, we always remember where we came from.

A reader writes (and others tweeted @PoPville):

“this is the scene returning from work today, can’t figure out what is up, walked up to the cops to ask, the said stay away looked like a box cutter on the ground open. This is all of 100 feet from the robbery with gun earlier today, and directly across the street from the homicide at the bus stop earlier this summer, I don’t know how many more times we have to tell them about this corner

MPD says:

“MPD members are investigating a reported assault at the location.”
