A Fond Farewell to THE FRUIT BAT

Dear Fellow Drinkers and Gintender Faithful,

We opened Fruit Bat two years ago as a way to share my Colombian heritage through fresh South American cocktails and food. It was a fun experiment, a fusion of great drinks and complementary cuisine.

H Street NE continues to evolve, and I’m eager to build a new idea. Saturday, June 9th, will be Fruit Bat’s last night.

We’d love for you to join us to celebrate and say goodbye to Fruit Bat. Beginning next Tuesday, June 5th, we’re offering every drink in the bar for $5 from 5-7 p.m. and Summer Punch for $4 all night, every night until we close. Sincere thanks to all our patrons who have dined and drunk with us over the last two years.

We will close for renovation and reopen July 1st. To welcome the new concept, we will hold several private opening parties the first week. Please stop by Fruit Bat next week to add your name to the guest list! If you’d like to track our progress, we invite you to follow us on twitter @mysterybardc.

Church & State, upstairs at 1236 H, will be open during renovation and will now be open Tuesday-Saturday. Follow @churchstatedc to get info about upcoming events and specials for the summer.

Dear PoPville,

Last Saturday just before 12AM I was walking home as I passed the intersection of H and 14th NE when I was jumped by a group of roughly 10 teenagers in the age range of 14 to 17. One kid sucker punched me in the back of the head while another took a swing at my face and missed. I was able hit that assailant in the face subduing him but it wasn’t enough. At that time the other kids threw me into the side of the bus stop and preceded to kick and punch me repeatedly. Finally a group of women were driving by and yelled when the suspects fled by foot towards Trinidad.

When the police came they tracked the kids down, I was able to identify 2 of the kids that hit me. The detective on the scene knew exactly who the kids were and said they have a history of doing this stuff in the neighborhood.

After I clearly identified 2 of the suspect the detective said he was still unable to charge them with anything other than a curfew violation. His reasoning was that I was unable to provide any other distinguishing characteristics to press charges, such as facial features or specific clothing type. It is virtually impossible when being kicked repeatedly to identify any other feature than race and general clothing. Each one of the assailants was a black teenager wearing black.

Luckily I didn’t sustain any major injuries other than a few bumps and bruises. This is because I was able to tuck and protect by head. If I didn’t know how to protect myself I don’t think I’d be able to write this email right now.

When is this type of unnecessary violence going to stop? Everyday I read this blog and at least once a week I read a similar story about someone who was mugged by a group of random teenagers. Clearly, the mayor and the police chief don’t deem this as a problem that they need to solve or else there would be strict curfew enforcement and prosecution of these types of crimes. When is this going to become a priority? When are the good citizens of this city going to standup and demand that something is done? I’m afraid that some innocent person is going to need to lose their life before anything is done.

From the MPD-1D listserv:

I wanted to pass this message along not only in my capacity as PSA 104 Citizen Co-Coordinator, but also as a concerned neighbor. Tonight, my wife and I were walking with our 9-month-old son and our dog. As we rounded the corner on 8th St NE, at 8th and L, we were immediately spotted by an extremely large dog who then charged us from nearly 10 houses away. This and another dog were off leash, sitting on the porch of a house in the middle of the 1100 block of 8th St NE. The dog was white in color, probably 120 pound American Bulldog (it made our St. Bernard mix look small). Fortunately, after kicking, screaming, and (stupidly) pulling the dog off of our dog, we were able to escape the situation. A number of neighbors and passersby also rushed to assist.

It was brought to my attention by responding MPD officers that this is not an isolated incident for this address. The owners of these dogs have been cited multiple times, but unfortunately the dogs are still there (perhaps more unfortunate that the owners are still there).

So, my messages are to 1) avoid this block if you are walking your dogs or children; and 2) if you experience anything remotely like this incident, please call 911, regardless of whether you or your dog were hurt. In this case, it is very important that there are multiple incidents on file in trying to deal with a problem property and irresponsible pet owners.

Thanks to all who tweeted to @PoPville and sent emails about the crazy sight above. Just before midnight @kswex wrote:

From a press release:

Horace and Dickies is the latest addition to the growing number of independent restaurants on Old Takoma’s Main Street. Using the formula that has been successful at the original Horace and Dickies, an institution on the H St Corridor in Washington, DC for over 20 years, the new location will open this week at 6912 4th Street, NW in the Takoma neighborhood of Washington, DC.

Owner Simone Shannon, with the blessing from her Dad, Richard “Dickie” Shannon, will be expanding the family business and bringing the same favorite menu to Old Takoma which includes fried fish, shrimp, crab cakes and chicken plus soul satisfying sides like collard greens, macaroni and cheese, french fries, potato salad and slaw. Homemade cakes and pies round out the menu as well as a new addition to the Takoma menu – fish tacos.

“While people definitely travel from around the city to get our food, we selected the Takoma location because we were looking to tap into a new market in another area of DC,” said Simone Shannon. “We were particularly drawn to the Takoma neighborhood because the community is recognized for supporting its independent businesses.”

Known for their reasonable prices, large portions and quality food, Horace and Dickies has attracted not only the Washington, DC community, but also Adam Richman and Man v Food on The Travel Channel which also helped to develop a steady flow of visiting tourists.

About Horace and Dickies: Horace and Dickies is a family business which has been bringing fresh made food to the Washington area for over 20 years. The original location is at 809 12th St. NE (at H St.) Washington, DC with hours: Mon-Sat 10am-2am and Sun 11am-7pm. The new location is located at 6912 4th St, NW, Washington, DC with hours: Mon-Fri 10am-9pm and Sun 11am-7pm.

We previously judged Horace & Dickie’s here.
