Grace Deli, 701 H Street, NE

On Thursday we learned of the horrible murder of Hae Soon “June” Lim which occurred in Grace Deli at the corner of 7th and H St, NE. It is very painful to look at but an extremely moving memorial has sprouted at the corner.

CBS reported:

“Lim was just one year away from retirement according to her son.”

Rest in Peace June Lim.

From a press release:

Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced today that the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has selected the team of Dean-Facchina LLC to complete the design and construction of the District’s first modern streetcar line along H Street and Benning Road, NE. The proposed contract was sent to the Council this week for review and approval.

“This is an important step forward to ensure the streetcar line will be in operation late next year,” said Mayor Gray. “With this contract in place, residents will see immediate progress on the final construction needed to get the cars running on H and Benning.”

Dean-Facchina will be responsible for the design and construction of the western and eastern termini of the streetcar line, the overhead catenary power system, and the Car Barn/Training Center at Benning Road and 26th Street, NE.

“Design-build contracts overlap the design and construction phases, which can shave valuable time off the delivery schedule for projects like this,” said DDOT Director Terry Bellamy. “As soon as we issue the Notice to proceed the team will be able to hit the ground running to complete this line.”

Streetcar tracks and platforms were installed on H Street and Benning Road as part of the Great Streets Projects that were completed last year. The District also owns 3 streetcar vehicles and 2 additional vehicles are now under construction at the Oregon Iron Works/United Streetcar facility in Clackamas, Oregon.

Dean-Facchina LLC is a joint venture between M.C. Dean, Inc. and the Facchina Construction Company, Inc., a leading regional design-build heavy civil infrastructure firm. The Dean-Facchina Team was specially formed for this particular design-build project. Both firms have extensive experience working on District transportation project, and the team has named Systra and Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) as the lead designers for this project.

Alas, it’s bittersweet as our move to a new place will have us leaving the best landlord either of us have ever had. We have no issues being references that prospective tenants could contact, and will do whatever possible to help you in showing the house to the next tenants in line. From popularise:

The concept will be based around an inviting market place environment spearheaded by collaboration between the creators of DURKL and Toki Underground; combining both fashion and food, while at the same time giving local vendors an opportunity to market and sell their products.

We believe that H Street is ready for something new and different. A space that will operate both day and night, during the week and on weekends, providing an offering as diverse as the neighborhood itself. We think of it like a new age Eastern Market. We are excited about the potential possibilities for this project, and look forward to further developing the concept with the input and support of our future customers.

From a press release:

“Commissioned by local restaurant Smith Commons Dining Room & Public House (1245 H Street, NE), the artist is covering a 35′ x 30′ space on the building side wall with an image originally painted on canvas, entitled ‘Dusk.’ The mural is a realistic depiction of a hybrid rooster / man in a cape pulled open to reveal a pastoral landscape in the vein of 19th century Romanticist painters, with the business name blended in at the roof edge.”

“This is the second work by GAIA for the restaurant. The first image, a single hand (a recurring theme in his work) posed in a manner reminiscent of classic paintings of spiritual figures, was added to the 2nd level of the building in early 2011.

On Sunday, June 10, from 5-7pm, Contemporary Wing will host an artist talk and reception with GAIA, who will share the story of his work, his inspirations and thoughts on street art, and examples of his international installation and artworks. More detail will be available through the gallery’s website (ContemporaryWing.com).”
