Back in early Nov. ’11 we noted that Schakolad had closed their retail space at 1107 19th St, NW (just north of L street.) A permit on the window confirms some scuttlebutt that a Crumbs Bake Shop will be moving into the space.

Crumbs is on a tear. While they haven’t reached Fro-yen-yo proportions, in late Oct. ’11 they opened up at 888 17th St. NW and they already have stores at 604 11th Street NW and in Union Station.

Stay tuned for their next location.

Originally built as a single family residence in 1893, 1730 New Hampshire Avenue NW is currently comprised of 22 condominium units divided between the historic main home and the carriage house in the back. Several of the units are accessed through a courtyard between the two structures. The courtyard area includes a number of outdoor stairways and various private and common decks. The property was developed in the mid 1990’s by Keener Squire, who also completed such notable projects as the 2006 extensive renovation and restoration of the 300+ unit Chastleton located at 16th and R St NW.

Every since I noticed the $1 beer special at Hot N Juicy in Woodley Park, I’ve been a bit obsessed with finding more $1 beer options. I’m also obsessed with cedar shingles but that’s neither here nor there.

Anyway, it gives me great pleasure to share another find – Fiesta located in the old Taj Mahal space upstairs at 1327 Connecticut Ave, NW has a sweet deal. $1 Miller Lite drafts on Thurs. and Sat.

And as previously mentioned, if you don’t like Miller Lite you can go a few storefronts down to the Madhatter for $1 Bud light drafts on Thursdays.

From an email:

“The Heurich House Museum, the German brew master’s castle located south of Dupont Circle on New Hampshire Avenue, invites the public to take a holiday Candlelight Tour on Friday, December 9 or Saturday, December 10. The home will be open from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Admission costs $15 for Adults and $5 for Children.

The mansion, often called a hidden gem of northwest Washington, will be decorated for the Victorian-era holiday season. Guests will enjoy performances of traditional German Christmas carols by the Alpine Singers and Washington Sängerbund at 7:00 and 8:00pm each night. The museum will serve traditional sweets donated by local German bakeries, and Saint Nikolaus will make an appearance on Saturday evening.

This annual event is a celebration of Germany’s most important holiday, and takes place in the home of the most successful German merchant in Washington, D.C. Heurich celebrated his achievements by building the mansion in Dupont Circle. A technological marvel, the home was crafted by German artisans, and is considered one of the most intact Victorian homes in the country. Museum Docents conduct weekly tours of the mansion, and it is available for special event rentals.

Heurich’s brewing company was the largest non-governmental employer in the District, and he was the world’s oldest brewer at his death at 102. From the time of the brewery’s closing in the 1950’s, there had been no other brewery in Washington, D.C. until D.C. Brau opened its doors this April 2011.

“Dear PoPville,

This morning I was waiting for the metro at Dupont station and as I was waiting, a train pulled up going in the opposite direction and one of the middle cars was literally billowing with smoke. Now, I’ve often entered a metro station only to smell something burning, but in this case a train packed with people pulled up right in front of me and you could actually visibly see the smoke rising from beneath the car. And there was a lot of smoke; it smelled absolutely horrible. The people waiting with me just stared in amazement and some even took pictures (maybe someone will read this and send it in). The packed train then took off, clearly not recognizing that one of its cars was burning.

We’ve all had issues with and complained about the metro, but I don’t recall ever reading something on this site about burning metro cars. My question to PoPville is: does anyone know what is causing it, and what, if anything, is metro doing to address the problem?”
