It’s been a little over a year since Iron Gate restaurant closed at 1734 N St, NW. When I was checking out the boarded up buildings on N Street, I also stopped in at the Topaz Hotel. Turns out the chef from Iron Gate is now the chef at Topaz Lounge located right across the street at 1733 N St, NW. Nice.

Still no word on a replacement for Iron Gate though.

“Dear PoPville,

It’s boggled me for a while so finally thought to ask, in hopes that you may have an answer. Why on the north side of N street in Dupont (between 17 and 18) are nearly all of the rowhouse windows covered up? I’ve tried thinking up theories but really, none of them make sense. Specifically, these buildings are just west of the Tabard Inn.”

This is one of those questions that comes up every year. Last we spoke about it, we learned:

“that apparently the developer, Mr. Morton Bender and his company N Street Follies Ltd, would like to develop the properties into a hotel but the issue of parking has been a major hold up. The impasse has gone on for years and there are those who think it’s time to go back to the drawing board.”

Unfortunately, I predict the topic will come up again next year. Frustrating and a bit ridiculous at this point…

Yesterday I noted the Komi expansion looked nearly completed at 1511 17th St, NW. Turns out it is completed. A reader attended some preview events and shares a few details:

“I ate here last week. It’s called Little Saroh? Little Serah? Not quite sure of the spelling.

It’s a thai pre-fixe menu for $45. Walk ins only.”

In an email they shared some more details:

“6-7 course meals that change often (3-4 weeks or so). Kat Bangs from Komi is also doing the wine list there. No full bar, just beer and wine. I think the official opening is slated for the end of this week.

I don’t remember the names of the dishes, but they’re served family style, seating for 35 or so people….

Same quality you expect from Komi, served family style.”

More info when it becomes available.

Back in April ’11 we first learned of the plans for the 2nd floor space at 1216 Connecticut Ave, NW (above Shake Shack) in Dupont. This past weekened the Guitar Shop cleaned all of its inventory. The owner says that the shop will stay alive on the Web here.

According to a liquor license application the Guitar Bar will be:

“Upscale tavern serving European sausages, hotdogs, pretzels and popcorns featuring DJ and background music. No designated dance floor – no dancing. Summer Garden with 210 seats. Seating capacity is 60. Total occupancy load is 330.”

For those that went to the annual High Heels Race (17th St, NW in Dupont) how was it this year? One reader shares their experience:

“I loved attending last night’s drag heel race near Dupont until about 20 minutes after the race when the police decided that the street needed to be cleared, and did such with a lot of force and rudeness, using motorcycles with loud sirens to push people onto the sidewalks so that we literally could not leave, causing more of a crowd problem than they had before. It seems doubtful to me that many cars would be inconvenienced by another half hour of road closure at 10 PM on a Tuesday, and I’m wondering if anyone else felt these actions were unnecessary, unproductive, and possibly disrespectful. I was shocked that they felt this was the best way to handle the situation. Am I naive to think that common sense and patience should be the norm, especially at an event about tolerance and celebrating all walks of life?”

Huffington Post DC shares some interesting details about the old Universal Gourmet space at 1825 Connecticut Ave, NW:

“Bakery entrepreneur Mark Furstenberg, former owner of Marvelous Market and The Breadline, is at work on a new yeast-centric concept: Bread Furst, a retail bakery to be located at 1825 Connecticut Ave. NW, near the Washington Hilton hotel.”

I’ll be sure to update as construction progresses and as they get closer to opening in late Feb.
