Thanks to a reader for sending word about Heritage India opening up in the former Skewers space above cafe Luna at 17th and P St, NW in Dupont. They write:

“I spoke with the owner of Heritage and he told me that the new location hopes to open in the next two weeks.”

Last we heard Heritage India was also opening a space in the former Soho Cafe and Market space at 19th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW.

Will anyone miss Skewers?

Back in June 2012 we learned that the former Townhouse/Secret Safeway at 20th and S St, NW would become Glen’s Garden Market. The building has been renovated and Glen’s has just applied for a liquor license to sell beer and wine:

“New Market specializing in locally grown and raised produce, meats, poultry, and dairy products for on and off premise consumption. Café will be communal seating space. Market and Café will sell locally made beer and wine. Request a tasting endorsement.”

Stay tuned for a spring 2013 opening.

From a press release:

It’s with bittersweet regret that we announce the closing of Hudson Restaurant & Lounge on September 29, 2012. There will have a finale party on Friday, September 28 from 11am until 2am featuring some of the menu’s favorites, cocktails and entertainment by Adrian Loving and Friends.

Owner Alan Popovsky look’s to the future as new and exciting changes are ahead as he prepares for new Presidential concepts, following the lead of LINCOLN Restaurant. Construction is about to begin on Teddy & The Bully Bar and scheduled to open in early 2013 and the anticipation is palpable. The official banner went up today (photo attached below). Paying homage to our first President of the 20th Century, the restaurant will feature a thoughtful design from local artist Maggie O’Neill and an outstanding small plate concept from a not yet named Executive Chef.

The new location is situated in the heart of the downtown business and entertainment district at 1200 19th Street, NW. The location was formerly the long standing restaurant Sam and Harry’s.

The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema writes that Hudson will become an Italian bistro:

The owner of Fujimar and Barcode is taking over the soon-to-close Hudson in the West End and giving the corner address a fresh identity. Tentatively called The Greenhouse Bistro, the future 180-seat restaurant will merge an Italian bistro with an enclosed herb garden, says restaurateur Masoud Aboughaddareh.

From a press release:

Daily Grill, specializing in classic American dishes, will soon unveil a newly designed bar set to evoke nostalgia with a modern feel. The revamped location Washingtonians have grown to love will also debut a new happy hour menu designed by Executive Chef Phil Kastel. In honor of the remodel, Daily Grill will offer Happy Hour prices all night through October 5.

The redesign includes an expansion of the drink menu including ten new taps, a $4 handle, premium martinis, and wine specials. New draft selections include: Schlafly Pilsner from Missouri, Brooklyn Oktoberfest from New York, Maryland-made Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber, Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale from Maine, Dogfish Head Midas Touch from Delaware and Kelly’s Irish Cider from Florida.

The updated bar menu will feature $3-5 happy hour specials with new items including:

Pub Burger
Crab Cake BLT
Chicken Sausage & Arugula Lavash
Crispy Naked Wings
Parmesan Truffle Frites
Capitol Dog

For the interior, the restaurant enlisted the help of local architecture and interior design firm Streetsense. The roughly $250,000 remodel will introduce communal tables and comfortable booths along with lighting designed to create a social and intimate vibe. “The downtown DC Daily Grill had one goal in mind for the redesign – keep their loyal guests while bringing in a new generation. The redesign is warm and welcoming to all ages, featuring subtle changes that will significantly enhance the guest’s experience,” Rhena Saar said, a senior project designer. Guests will also enjoy a new surround sound audio system and additional flat screen TVs.

Yola opened up in south Dupont back in Dec. 2010. While they had a very loyal following, they’ll be closing on Sept. 28th (h/t EaterDC.) From their Facebook page:

As you may have noticed, we made the difficult decision to close our doors on September 28th. There is not any one cause that influenced our decision to close, but we want to be clear that we remain wholehearted believers in green businesses and feel confident that businesses that stick to their morals can thrive in the right environment. We are confident that you will enjoy the concept that will move into our space and feel deeply grateful to them for making this transition smooth. They share our commitment to high quality and socially conscious food.

We would really like to thank you all, not just as loyal customers (we are deeply humbled by the number of people we saw every day), but also for being kind, generous, and making our days brighter. We met so many amazing people along the way and we feel grateful for your friendship.

Some of you may be wondering where we will go from here. David will return his attention full time to commercial real estate and Laura is not sure what she will do but is ready for a vacation! For the next month, we will be working hard to ensure that we go out with a bang, continue to provide excellent service, and find wonderful jobs for all of our employees. We were extremely lucky to have a staff of bright, committed, and kind individuals who worked extremely hard for us, so now it’s our turn to return the favor. If you would like to get in touch with an employee about employment, feel free to speak to them directly at some point over the next 30 days or to email [email protected].

Thanks for making Yola a special place. We will miss you, so keep in touch!

Laura, David, and the rest of the Yola team
