“Sunday morning fire on 17th Street, NW (Komi and Little Serow building?), view from across Stead Park @PoPville”

Deon Glasser emails us the photo below:

“I live across the street from Komi and woke up to a huge fire on the top floor of the Komi building at 1509 17th Street. There’s speculation that a rooftop terrace caught on fire but there’s no way to be sure right now. DC fire department responded in force and quickly put it out. DCFD responded around 9 am this morning.”

I stopped by around 12:30pm and it looked like most of the damage was on the third floor. Komi has one small broken window (maybe to access the space?) Still not clear how significant that damage is on the inside but from outside it didn’t look too bad but obviously there could be serious water damage too. Updates as soon as they’re known. Thanks to all who emailed and tweeted us photos and info.

From a press release:

“Qualia Coffee is proud to announce our participation in the first FRESHFARM Market Thanksgiving Food Drive Coffee Fundraiser, this Sunday, November 2nd. We will be bringing our locally roasted coffee beans and cold brew to the market as well as brewing hot coffee on site. Twenty-five percent of proceeds will be donated to the FRESHFARM Markets Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit DC Central Kitchen, an organization that serves 5,000 nutritious means to low income local residents every day.

Established in 2009, Qualia Coffee is a full service coffee shop that serves as the home of the local roastery Fresh Off the Roast. Founded on the principle of treating roasted coffee like fresh produce, the roasting label features a wide selection of single-origin beans that highlight the natural diversity of flavors that coffee can exhibit. As a retail-only roaster, we are able to ensure all of our coffee is sold within three days. You will never find Fresh Off the Roast beans on store shelves, which is why our small-batch, artisan approach to coffee roasting is a natural fit for your neighborhood farm market.

Along with several Fair-Trade and Organic certified coffees, we will be featuring offerings from some of our direct-trade partners, such as Gold Mountain Coffee Growers (Nicaragua) and Redeeming Grounds (Colombia). Owner and head roaster, Joel Finkelstein, will also be on hand to answer questions about each of the single-origin offerings as well as any questions attendees may have about growing, roasting and brewing coffee.

So come out to support a great cause this Sunday at the Dupont Circle Farm Market, 9am until 2pm.

What: Coffee Pop-Up
When: Sunday, November 2, 2014, 9AM until 2PM
Where: Dupont Circle Farmers Market
Why: To support FRESHFARM Market Thanksgiving Food Drive and, of course, good coffee

“@PoPville RIP the Dupont Cosi – what happened!?”

And another reader sends via email:

“The Cosi on North Dupont [1647 20th St. NW] has closed as of yesterday. They were taking out all of the furniture and equipment when I was walking by. Did you hear? What gives? That’s three closed businesses within the same half-block: Cosi, Five Guys and Sprint.

Rats or rent? Or horrible rats are jacking up the prices? Lol. If it is rats, why hasn’t the other businesses started shutting down? Even worse, will it infect the beloved Chipotle? Hahaha.

Just curious. Also wonder if maybe the owner is either selling or reconstructing the lot. No one has moved in, except for Custom Fuel (the old Potbelly, that started it all).”

The 17th Street High Heel Race is tomorrow night:

“The High Heel Race is one of Washington, DC most unique events with a rich history of “Crossing The Line Since 1986”. On the Tuesday before Halloween, thousands of spectators pack the Dupont Circle Neighborhood to watch hundreds of costumed drag queens show off their extravagant outfits and race down Historic 17th Street, NW.

Location: 17th Street, between P and S Streets NW near Dupont Circle
Race Time: Begins at 9 p.m. Participants gather as early as 6 p.m.

The start of the Race will be in between Riggs and R street on 17th street NW and the ending will be on 17th Street between P and Church street.”

For those not familiar, some history from their facebook page:

“For anyone who has ever wondered about the History of the High Heel Race here it is. In 1986 JR.’s Bar & Grill opened. it was formerly Annies Paramount Steak House. A few guys were dressed in drag and said “let’s run to Annies (now located a block away) do a shot and run back to JR.’s. Well they did this and the next year they had a few more people and it was a continued tradition. It eventually got to be so big that the police had to shut down the street and worked with JR.’s to help make sure the event was organized and safe for everyone. We are happy to say that with the Help of JR.’s that this event has been problem free for 28 years now. The poice department and the Mayors office have been amazing throughout the History of the Race. This is a neighborhood event and it always brings out the best in people whether it be their creativeness or just putting people in a positive mood. The Race used to be on halloween night but to help the police department out it is always held the Tuesday before halloween now.”
