Two Retail Spaces Filled at 1730 M St, NW – Oxford Deli and a New Nightclub

I’ve been wondering who will be coming to the vacant retail spots at 1730 M St, NW (just east of Connecticut Ave.) The one further east will be home to Oxford Deli. The owner says he hopes to open by the end of the month. Oxford Deli will only be open during the week.

Coming to the vacant space further east (next to the Edible Arrangements) is a new nightclub. Their liquor license application says:

“New Nightclub and Lounge offering live entertainment. Occasional catering services for corporate charity and private events. No Nude performances. Total occupancy load of 320, and total number of seats is 299. Number of Summer Garden seats is 21 and number of Sidewalk Café seats is 40.”

History of the U.S.S.Co. Building

On Tuesday we admired the U.S.S.Co. Building located at 10th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW.

Thanks to a reader for sending in some great background info. He writes:

“It was, believe it or not, a storage warehouse built for the United States Storage Company in 1909, when making utilitarian buildings look perfunctory and ugly wasn’t in style yet.”

Some background info from LOC:

Significance: The tallest structure on Square 348, the U.S. Storage Building is an excellent example of early 20th Century design solutions for multistory commercial buildings. The powerful scale and rich articulation of this Late Romanesque Revival building is derivative of the designs of Louis Sullivan, who helped pioneer multistory design at the turn of the 20th Century. The building’s intrinsic design merit, combined with its use of similar materials, relates it to the surrounding streetscape.

A readers sends in this bizarre photo from the Old Post Office building at 12th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW. It took place yesterday around 2pm. She writes: “Complete with music. No explanation.” Anyone know what it was?

Maybe a preview of what is in store with the coming luxury Trump hotel…?

Movement at Del Frisco’s Grill Coming to Old Les Halles Space on Pennsylvania Ave – Opening this Summer

1201 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

Back in Dec. 2011 we finally learned who would be moving into the long vacant Les Halles space at 1201 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Signs out front say they’ll be opening in summer 2012. They’ve also just applied for a liquor license that says:

“Full service restaurant with summer garden. Seating capacity is 346.”

Their Web site says:

“Del Frisco’s Grille combines a social atmosphere with exciting cuisine, an expansive wine list & hand-crafted cocktails. Food and drinks are built to share, so get together with a friend or share the experience with your neighbor.”
