“Dear PoP,

What’s the deal with Snap on 18th St.? It opened months ago, at first the hours were from 5pm-1am, or something like that geared toward the evening/late night Adams Morgan crowds. Then it changed its hours to open during the day, and that lasted a few months? Now it’s completely close all the time. I haven’t seen it open for weeks! Got any inside dirt?”

Hmm, I stopped by this weekend and on Sat. there were open around 3pm. I can understand the confusion, though, because the hours Mon. – Fri. are a bit unusual. They are open in Adams Morgan, Mon. – Fri. from 6pm – 11pm and on Sat. and Sun. from 10am – 11pm.

Do you guys think these hours make sense?

Snap is located in the old CD Exchange between Caliyogurt and Saki on 18th St, NW. There is also a Georgetown location at 1062 Thomas Jefferson St NW. Interestingly, the Georgetown location’s hours are listed as Mon-Sun 9 am – 11 pm.

A reader posted this info in the recent discussion we had about Stroga located at 1808 Adams Mill Road, NW.

Does anyone know what the story is with this vacancy? It is totally separate from the Harris Teeter? Any ideas on why it is so hard to find a tenant (it seems to have been vacant for ages)? You think it is just an odd size space or simply the rent is too high or the location is tough? Seems like the Harris Teeter is doing well so I’m wondering what’s up with this space…

Back in Nov. a reader wrote in asking if Stroga was being used as a nightclub on weekends.

Stroga gym is located at 1808 Adams Mill Road, NW. Their Web site says:

“The building has a rich and romantic history, and with its fine woodwork, imported stained glass and intricate moldings STROGA is sure to take your breath away. It’s the perfect location to hold your special event!

The space is available for wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate meetings, luncheons, and dinners, fundraisers, dances, private parties, and much more.”

For those who voiced concerns earlier, today’s meeting could be a good opportunity to let them know.  And get some light refreshments…

I don’t know if this should be a horse’s ass award because I’m really grateful that the amazing Toulouse-Lautrec mural has been preserved. According to Cultural Tourism DC:

“This portrait of cabaret singer Aristide Bruant by fin-de-siécle Parisian artist Toulouse-Lautrec has presided over the night life of Adams Morgan for 20 years. The mural was painted from a photograph by the restaurant’s original owner, André Neveux. Although Neveux considered himself only an amateur, the image has entranced pedestrians and lured diners throughout several changes in the club’s ownership. ”

Having noted that, it does seem like the space has been vacant for ages. Anyone know how long? At one point I heard a restaurant was going in but then I haven’t heard anything in a while. What’s the word on this great building?

“Dear PoP,

Walked by Uptowner on 18th today and noticed that it’s already closed!! I didn’t think the place would last long from the few times I had been in there and am not at all surprised that it’s already closed. Know what’s going in there in the future? Oh man I hope it’s a good Vietnamese or Korean restaurant!”

Wow, Uptowner Cafe had opened up in May ’10 in the long vacant Carribou Coffee space at 2421 18th St NW. Their other locations including the one in Columbia Heights remain open.

I tried to confirm by phone but the call went straight to voicemail. Anyone know when/if the Adams Morgan location closed? Is it possible it’s just a temporary/holiday closing? If the closing is permanent I fear the space may remain vacant for a number of years again…
