Back in early October, Bistro 18 became a Jamaican Jerk Chicken spot (with the dubious slogan, “Wanna Get Jerked”) called Jamaican Joe’s at 2420 18th Street NW. Last weekend the signage was removed revealing the old Bistro 18 signs. I’m not sure if Bistro 18 will actually reopen or someone else will move in but I’ll keep my eyes on the space.

It seems 18th Street is having a bit of an identity crisis with next door neighbor Slaviya recently becoming ‘A Taste of New Orleans’ before returning to Slaviya again. Not to mention the space that is now McNasty’s…for now.

Press releases went out yesterday. From Rep. Norton:

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) has confirmed that the Kalorama post office (2300 18th St.), located in Ward 1, has been taken off the United States Postal Service (USPS) Expanded Access Study List and is no longer being considered for closure.

Last week, Norton announced that seven of the 19 D.C. post offices on the list for possible closure had been removed, and USPS announced this week that it would delay closing or consolidating any post offices until May 2012.

CM Graham wrote:

At a Ward 1 community meeting convened by USPS and myself, DC Postmaster Gerald Roane acknowledged some 2500 messages he had received to preserve both 14th/Wallach and Kalorama/Adams Morgan post offices.

Postmaster Roane then announced that Kalorama would be removed from the list of post offices “under study” and that it would not be considered for closing. Further good news, USPS is committed to finding a new U Street area location for the 14th St P.O. to replace the current location which is set for redevelopment. Until the end of the lease in February 2012, the Post Office will remain open. Hopefully by then we will have at least a temporary location in the U Street neighborhood.

This home is located at 1480 Harvard St, NW:

The flier says:

“Welcome to this grand brick end-unit townhome built in the Wardman style less than 2 blocks from Columbia H. metro and shopping! W/ 3,000 sq. ft. this versatile layout could be finished in its current configuration as a spacious 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, w/ a walk-out basement & a detached one-car garage. The possibilities are fantastic, and the location can not be beat. .. Welcome and enjoy!!”

You can find more info here and photos here.

This 4 bed/2.5 bath went under contract in only 4 days. Asking was $549,000. Do you think it was bid up?

Full pints and flights will be available as well as the bourbon special of the night and with the purchase of a 2oz pour of Buffalo Trace, Bookers, or Hudson Rye, a pint will be discounted $2 while supplies last.

On a sadder note this will be my last shift before I take the long move up to Buffalo…gotta see about a girl.

Buffalo’s gain is our loss. Brian Kruglak was def. one of DC’s best beer directors. Good luck, Brian!

Back in August ’11 we pre-Preview of Mintwood Place coming to 1813 Columbia Rd, NW below Perry’s in Adams Morgan. I stopped by this weekend to see how it was progressing. I was lucky enough to run into the owner, Saied Ayoubi Azali, who invited me inside to take a few photos. There are still some finishing touches ongoing but they are fairly confident that they’ll be open by the end of the month.

I don’t think the photos do it justice because I was trying to avoid the construction but the reclaimed materials were looking awesome:

Saied was also very psyched about their wood burning oven:

This is def. one of my top three places I can’t wait to open (the other two are Chez Billy’s in Petworth and the Tryst/Diner spot coming to Columbia Heights.)

From a press release:

“On December 1st, owners of Treasury Vintage, Cathy Chung & Katerina Herodotou will take over Adams Morgan vintage boutique, Meeps. The name and location will stay, with a promised new energy and focus. Since its days as a petite hideaway for the city’s hippest hunters to its welcome expansion in Adams Morgan, Meeps has held a special place in the hearts and history of DC’s vintage retail community. Meeps’ reputation as the go-to vintage clothing spot has only grown as the shop represented distinctive expertise in local and national media.

After four years of participating in the thriving vintage scene in Washington D.C., first with pioneering pop-up shop Listopad in 2007 and then, since 2009, with their acclaimed 14th Street vintage boutique Treasury, Cathy Chung and Katerina Herodotou are thrilled to carry on the Meeps legacy. Having been avid shoppers of Meeps, they are excited to add their own contemporary curatorial touch to the newly envisioned space.

Meeps will continue to offer the freshest selection of the best affordable casual vintage, with plenty of playful gems for parties, costumes and special events. Starting in early 2012, Meeps will begin a Buy-Sell-Trade system that will enable a rotating selection of gently used items from current designers and popular retailers. The new Meeps will expand its fashionable reach by offering hand-picked current and vintage items side-by-side. Local designers will still be represented in-shop, and, new artists and designers are encouraged to get in touch. Plans for a shop redesign are in place for 2012. Next year will mark Meeps’ second decade in the District and Chung and Herodotou are so happy to be able to continue the Meeps legacy for many years to come.

Please join us to celebrate this new era of Meeps next Tuesday, December 6! Our launch party will feature DJs Baby Alcatraz (Smashing Time) and Sara (Kicks!, Pow Wow), sparkling drinks and snacks from 5 PM to 9 PM. Back in mid-Oct. ’11 we learned that Slaviya was going to become ‘A Taste of New Orleans’ at 2424 18th St., NW. I noticed that the Taste of New Orleans sign had already come down this weekend. Turns out the lease negotiations fell through and Slaviya is back up and running.

I guess I needn’t have worried for New Orleans Cafe down the block.

Maybe Cities would be interested in another shot at the space…?
