“I am a part of Batala, Washington DC, which is an international all women band, that plays Afro-Brazilian / Samba-Reggae rhythms. Batala Washington has grown tremendously during the past year and we are ready to hold our first fundraiser! The fundraiser is taking place on Saturday, June 27th from 8pm-11pm at the Josephine Butler Park Center (near Meridian Hill Park, U St Metro).

This fundraiser will help Batala participate in the 2009 Brazil Day festival in NYC in September, which commemorates Brazil

Alright, I think I have to bring back the PoP weekend picks because this was awesome. All week they’ve been having concerts at various venues around town and this weekend they had a 2 day free concert by the Washington Monument. I hit one show at Bohemian Caverns and stopped by the Mall on Sunday. The concert on the mall was fantastic. I caught Buckwheat Zydeco:

The weather was perfect:

The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival Web site says:

“The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival (DEJF) is an annual celebration named in honor of musical genius and native Washingtonian Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington. Each year, thousands come together in the nation

Jazz in the Sculpture Garden, located at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, is a blast. When the weather is warm as it was last Friday it is hard to find a better way to spend your early evening. The concerts go from 5:00PM to 8:30PM and you can find the full schedule here. I hadn’t been for a while and forgot how fun it was. It’s a great spot for a picnic or just to put your feet in the fountain.

And don’t forget the cool sculptures:

“Brazilian Rhythms this Thursday! Neville C. is baaack!!

Neville missed last month’s Brazilian Rhythms party and he’s gone through various stages of grief because of it. First came regret, then disappointment, and finally acceptance. He’s now in the “I’ll show them” stage. He’s had two months to get fired up (and find new records!) so look out!

Come help Neville’s recovery this Thursday at Cafe Saint-Ex (14th and T Streets, NW). Starting at 9:30 Neville will be throwing down the best in samba rock, MPB, tropicalia, samba, baile funk, Brazilian hip-hop, forro and bossa nova. NO COVER.

Sponsored by Som Records and Peroni Beer.”

“We have about 10 short films, free popcorn and happy hour. It starts at 2 and goes until 8pm.”

From yesterday’s comments:

“So where would you suggest a DC neophyte go for a metal/punk scene? I’ve been to Black cat, DC9, Velvet Lounge and still nothing.”

Any metal/punk fans out there?
