“Washington National Opera (WNO) celebrates its seventh season of free opera simulcasts at Nationals Park with title sponsor Mars Chocolate North America for the M&M’S® Opera in the Outfield performance of Rossini’s charming romantic comedy Cinderella on Saturday, May 16, 2015. This dazzling production has been acclaimed worldwide for its witty characterizations, rainbow-bright sets and costumes, and easy-to-follow English translation, making it a perfect opera for the entire family. Gates open at 5 p.m. for “pre-ball” activities, and the opera will be broadcast live from the Kennedy Center Opera House to the high-definition NatsHD scoreboard at the ballpark at 7 p.m. Free seating will be available in the stands, while access to the outfield grass will be limited on a first-come, first-served basis when gates open at 5 p.m. More information, including a chance to RSVP to win prizes, is available at OperaintheOutfield.org.

“My name is James Perry and I am the director of Bands at Eastern Sr. High School in Washinton, DC. Let me be short and quick to the point, as a marching band we practice more than we could ever perform during a school year. In knowing, the accurate statement of “that practice makes perfect” describes us exactly. Our award-winning band is performance ready and the invites to events are pouring in for our group to display their showmanship. We are scheduled to travel to Virginia on May 16, 2015 for an upcoming performance and it will be our time to shine and represent DCPS as the good-will ambassadors of music education.
It takes time to craft our show-style but more importantly it requires finances of significant amounts to transport the band to various venues. We do an enormous amount of hosting and having fundraisers but our rising budget is too large and requires financial support from our fan base. It goes without saying that the allotted budget for an all-volunteer organization like ours is miniscule. Yet, that doesn’t stop the commitment of the many students, parents and band staff who report daily for instructions.
We ask so much from our students and they comply unconditionally by maintaining and in most instances far surpassing the required GPA of 2.0. It would give our students such an emotional boost and help us financially. If you could find it in your heart to donate $10.00-20.00 it would be greatly appreciated.
Ponder this thought, to march in the street is free but to make a marching band move it takes money.”

Art Activations: Black Space by Holly Bass; “Women in Color,” by Ra Nubi
Black Space is public art installation created by Holly Bass. A tiny house in the shape of the “Diamond District”—three smooth sides and one jagged side, Black Space replicates the map view of DC. The District has been a center of black culture since the early 1900s and boasted a majority black population from 1960-2010. Black Space sits at the juncture of DC history and the future of DC. We believe that regardless of ethnicity or background, as DC residents and tourists we all occupy black space.
“Women in Color” began as a collaborative piece to be performed at the opening of Rose Jaffe‘s solo exhibition also entitled “Women in Color.” Using live instrumental accompaniment and an improvisation based score for movement, Ra Nubia explores the art of “Now” also known as the present moment by transforming the performance space into a responsive and interactive environment for not only the dancers and musicians, but the audience as well. Women in Color is a work in progress created by Ra Nubi.
