Thanks to a reader for sending:
“My wife recently commissioned the attached mural for the side of our garage. The artist is Kellie Cox. Apparently this young woman is new to the DC area, having just arrived less than a year ago from Ithaca, NY. She did a wonderful job on our garage. Not only that, as it turns out she is one of the artists whose work is displayed on the new recycling trucks. I believe her truck will be wrapped this coming weekend. I thought you would enjoy this seeing the final product, and I trust the PoPville viewers will as well. Kellie is a delight and she’s bringing something beautiful to our urban scene here in Washington, DC. Again, we’re in South Manor Park, in Ward 4.”

It’s easy to take ‘Homage to a Community’ by Andrew Reid and Carlos Alves for granted – despite the silly no drinks part it is spectacular. Next time you go through the Petworth metro – take a second to look at it from start to finish.

Some closeups after the jump. (more…)

“My buddy Spencer just painted a new mural at 17th and V NW. He would never post about it anywhere or take credit, so I’m taking the liberty. His website is here.”

“Dear PoPville,
I saw the item about the demolition at 13 & U, NW. I live near 12th & U and walk by there pretty regularly. The upper, more sun-bleached part of the mural was uncovered a week or so ago while the demolition was still underway. Then just a couple days ago the lower half of the mural, much brighter in color because it had been completely walled over, began to appear as workers slowly chipped away at the wall of the adjoining building.
Would be interesting to know when these were painted and the story behind them. Pretty sure that the building that housed Rite Aid and a few other shops was built in the 1980s, give or take, so obviously this mural pre-dates that. All I know for sure is that when we moved to the area in 2000 the Rite Aid building was there.”

Nice! Between Petworth Citizen and Willow on the 800 block of Uphsur St, NW.

Nice. Props again to Justin for sending in a couple shots of this one.

“On Saturday, the open one-acre lot at 1st and L streets NE was transformed into a giant canvas for artists for the Storey Park Paint Jam. The lot is currently used for NoMa’s free outdoor film series and Saturday is was the site of DC’s largest mural in the city. The event was sponsored by NoMa BID and Words Beats & Life in association with The Fridge DC, Blind Whino and the Pink Line Project.”
