“The District’s reported data for Sunday, January 3, 2021 includes 140 new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the District’s overall positive case total to 29,904.

The District reported that three additional residents lost their lives due to COVID-19.

Tragically, 797 District residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

Today, DC Health began posting metrics on vaccine doses in the District. This data will be posted weekly on Mondays. “My wife and I both recently tested positive for COVID and thankfully recovered. I thought we’d share our experience.”

“Dear PoPville,

My wife and I both recently tested positive for COVID and thankfully recovered. I thought we’d share our experience.

I applaud DC’s efforts to provide extensive and free testing. This program is the reason that we were able to quickly detect our infection and isolate from and protect our friends, neighbors, and co-workers. I know that residents in other states do not have this same resource.

However, after experiencing the full cycle of testing through quarantine, it is clear to us that DC’s exposure and tracing program is deeply flawed.

First, we both received our first phone calls from contact tracers approximately 48 hours after receiving our positive test results. By then, we had already spent hours online parsing through disparate guidance to figure out how to manage the quarantine. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be for less media savvy residents (let alone essential workers, providing distance learning environments for their children) to find and implement the right guidance during the most infectious period of the virus.

Second, while the contact tracers were nice, they texted us links to a supposed DC Covid guide that was supposed to answer all of our questions. That link did not work for either of us. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping to crowdsource better options for rapid COVID testing or 24-hour turnaround tests. My partner is a front-line worker, and as a result, I have gotten tested many times over the past seven months. The hospital does not provide easy testing options for their employees or spouses, so each time I need to get a test, I find myself in the same Google search spiral, only to wind up with the same options.

I’ve gotten tests at the DC firehouses, CVS, and Walgreens, as well as through Pixel by LabCorp and Let’s Get Checked. While I think all of these options have timing down to an average of 3-4 days, it remains incredibly difficult to find options for rapid tests or reliably faster turnarounds. (more…)

“Vaccine info for health care providers”

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to pass this along. I am a health care provider who works in private practice (not with COVID patients but in close contact with people all day) and I was wondering how we would be notified of the vaccine availability since we aren’t affiliated with a large health care system.

A former coworker of mine was in Giant today and randomly asked the pharmacist for info and got this today! Want to pass along to all health care providers who aren’t affiliated with the big hospitals/health care systems. You’ll likely need to bring a copy of your license or proof of your employment in a health care setting.”

Update from the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, as part of the District’s equitable distribution of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, DC Health launched a portal for workers in health care settings in the District to make an appointment to get vaccinated. At this time, the portal, which can be accessed through coronavirus.dc.gov/vaccinatedc, is only for workers in health care settings that have direct or indirect exposure to infectious materials and cannot telework. When registering, workers will need to attest that they work in such a setting and then present verification at the time of their appointment. The portal should only be used by workers who are part of the Phase 1a population.

 “We are launching this portal as a next step in our Vaccination Plan to ensure that those individuals who work in our health care settings and are at highest risk of exposure and infection know where to go to get the vaccine,” said Dr. Ankoor Shah, Interim Principal Deputy Director for DC Health and the District’s COVID-19 Vaccine Program Lead.
